NANO NAGLE

On April 26th, 1784, 238 years ago the Venerable Nano Nagle died. Before her death in 1784, Nano had opened 7 schools for poor children across Cork city, founded an Alms house for poor women, and most notably, founded the Presentation Order, who continue her education and social inclusion work today. Born to a wealthy Catholic family in 1718, Honora Nagle was given the pet name Nano by her father. The Penal Laws meant that education for Catholics was not available in Ireland and Irish Catholics were forbidden from traveling to the continent to be educated. Despite this, Nano’s family had Nano educated in France.

When in France, a series of moments inspired Nano to give her life to the poor. On her way home from a ball she saw paupers around a church in search of alms. This, among other events had a profound effect on Nano. When Nano’s father died she moved to Dublin to live with her mother and sister Ann, where she began to visit the poor with her sister. After the death of her Mother and sister Nano decided to become a nun and help the poor.

However the enclosure of the religious order allowed her little access to the poor which in turn helped her to make the decision to leave the order and return home to Cork. She lived in Cork with her brother Joseph and his wife Frances on what is now Douglas Street. Nano wanted to offer poor Catholic children an education but under the strict Penal Laws of the time operating such a school could lead to imprisonment, so Nano chose to work in secret. In the 1750s she opened a girls school which aimed to teach reading, writing, Catechism and needlework to poor Catholic girls in Cork City.

Within 10 years Nano was running seven schools across the city and was now teaching both boys and girls. By day she was a teacher and at night she visited the poor through the unlit city streets carrying her lantern with her. Soon she became known as Miss Nagle, the Lady of the Lantern. Nano began to plan for the future of her mission. In 1771 she used inheritance to build a convent for the Ursuline Sisters whom she invited to Cork from France.

Still concerned with the restrictions of an enclosed order on her mission Nano founded the Institute of Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1775, made up of herself and three of her followers. They took a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience to God but they did not take enclosure and continued with their work to teach and take care of the poverty stricken in Cork.

Nano’s work took its toll on her health in she died on April 26, 1784 aged 66.

NANO NAGLE BY RAPHAEL CONSIDINE PBVM

In the face of fear, she chose to be daring, In the face of anxiety, she chose to trust, In the face of impossibility, she chose to begin. To universal misery she opposed ministry to persons, To ignorance, knowledge, To disillusionment, tenacity of purpose, And to multiple vexations, singleness of heart. Faced with failure, she held fast to hope, Faced with death, she believed in a living future, And a programme for that future she gave in one word, Love.
