Ploemeur students visit Fermoy
Thirty-eight students from Ploemeur, France visited Fermoy last week and met with members of the Fermoy Ploemeur Twinning Association.
On Friday, April 15, the students took to the town accompanied by six adult leaders, headed by Maison des Jeunes official, Mohamed Yadass.
The group spent four days in the Cork Kerry region and wanted to visit Fermoy, which has been twinned with their own town Ploemeur, for almost 40 years.
Visiting students were greeted at the Fermoy Municipal District Offices by members of the Fermoy Ploemeur Twinning Association.
Councillors Deirdre O’Brien, Noel McCarthy and Frank O’Flynn were also on hand throughout the morning to extend an official welcome which was very much appreciated by the group.
A tour of Fermoy town was led by Twinning Association vice-chairperson, Gerry Feerick.
This included a visit to the Ploemeur Car Park and Friendship Bridge and the Rowing Club, where the students were delighted to be able to watch club members in action on the river.
Later, lunch was thoroughly enjoyed at the Wagon Tavern.
Ciaran O’Connor and Gerry Feerick provided music following the lunch and there was a real party atmosphere while students danced and sang.
Finally, small souvenirs of the visit were given to the students, while they presented the Twinning Association with some beautiful books and posters of Ploemeur.
Ending the day’s events, it was back on the bus for the very happy and pleasant group of 13-17 year olds, amid promises that they would keep great memories of their morning in their Irish twin town.
