IRISH BALLAD FOR UKRAINE

-

Once there was a Putin who wanted The Ukraine

First he tried the cheque book but that was all in vain

He next annexed the Crimea to show he was no fun

And added on the Donbas like any bloody hun.

Chorus

For a man with all the aces, where did it all go wrong,

Looks like The Ukraine is his very sad swan song.

The West is now united. Even Orban falls in line.

The Poles are playing a blinder. New thinking on the Rhine.

When natives they resisted and patience wearing thin

As an uneven truce persisted he decided to go all in.

He misread Zelensky, there be no submission

When Biden offered rescue he asked for ammunition.

Chorus

This would not be Georgia nor would it be ‘08

Ukraine would fight like hell and settle their own fate.

Putin wanted surrender and offered talks at Mins-Ke

Zelensky called his bluff. Shades of Lech Walensa

Chorus

Lukashenska being in lockstep with the invader

The talks were held in Gomel, not inside his border.

Putin’s plans in ruins when there was no plea

He went instead ballistic round the bleak Black Sea.

Chorus

He pauses to regroup and plan away to win

And seems to have decided on ‘Aleppo’ once again

His days are surely numbered and cause is truly lost, Whoever will replace him, we all must count the cost.

Chorus

Even Boris, the waffler has taken the right cue

To get away from London & do what he must do.

To act like mighty Churchill, do anything he will.

Jeffrey, Keith and Nicola can only watch and wonder at his brazen skill.

Chorus

Caught off guard XiPing now takes a Janus stand

Likewise the hawkish Modi, or has he shown his hand?

And what about Bold Rocket Man. From him we’ve yet to hear

But he’s bound to feel unhappy, upstaged by Putin’s War.

Chorus

Wily Macron’s use of Hotline should give him the chance

To extend his fame and stake his claim to a second term in France.

Vladimir Putin and Lackey One — Kirill, should exit the world stage

And leave Brave Russians free to turn a better page

They may in time forget them but the Ukrainians never will. - Ned Roche, 17/03/2022
