MENTAL HEALTH
In Ballindangan NS, students took part in a variety of activities to raise awareness about mental health. At present, the school is currently working towards receiving the Active Flag. Students have been walking / running laps of the yard every day.
Every lap they walk is 1km and so far they have walked the distance to Doneraile Park, Fota Island and Thomond Park. They are now walking to the Puck Fair in Co Kerry. They also engage in a variety of exercises like Russian twists, high knees, jumping Jacks and lunges.
Students are also working towards retaining their Amber Flag for Mental Health that was awarded to the school this year. Students engage in yoga, mindfulness and brain breaks daily. They also had a pyjama and movie day with popcorn to take a break from their hard work in school.
Last week, the senior room organised a science fair for the whole school. Students were in groups and conducted science experiments at their stations. A variety of experiments were to be observed including coke and
mentos, food colouring bubbles, an erupting volcano, an egg that could be sucked into a jar, rainbow cups, lava lamps and shaving foam to demonstrate rain fall. Students used a variety of skills including planning, group work,
communication and presentation skills. It was a very enjoyable day!
Finally, the students took a trip to Mitchelstown caves in March. Students learned all about the caves and their history.
Children saw fossils in the caves and learned about stalagmites and stalactites. They also learned about the material limestone and how it caused the formations in the caves.
