Coughlan on fire in Kilkenny
The Kilkenny City Harriers Streets of Kilkenny 5k took place Holy Thursday night, starting from the historic backdrop of Kilkenny Castle, crossing through both the new and medieval streets of Kilkenny. Having grown over the past years from humble beginnings the race saw over 700 athletes come to the start line.
The 2022 route was a two lap route starting and finishing on the Parade. Starting on the Parade, running down the Parade, proceeding along High street, Parliament street into Irish town. Turn right on to St Canice’s Place running straight over St Francis Bridge along the new road to the Castlecomer road junction, turning right to run along the Castlecomer road to the roundabout at the Hebron road junction, another turn to the right to run down John street upper, running down John street, over Johns bridge into Rose Inn Street. Keeping to the righthand lane along Rose Inn Street with a final right turn back up High Street was the extent of the loop all the be repeated to hit the finishing line on the Parade.
Ben Coughlan took to the start line for this one and what a performance this young man put in. Ben crossed the finish line in 30th position in a race that saw many elite athletes race in, in a phenomenal time of 15.32.
A new venue on the IMRA Munster calendar was the latest venue for the latest race on the IMRA Munster league. A 10k around the Craig trails on the Tipperary Kilkenny border.
The race kicked off in the village at the old phone box, heading down the road taking a right into woods. The first section the runners hit was fire road, followed by a nice nature trail, a right hand turn took them back onto fire road. From here this is where the climbing started up to Wellington tower running clockwise around the tower, a stone path took the runners out onto the trail in to the woods, crossing barriers to get back into the woods with a nice bit of downhill.
Another fire road section took them back into woods where they came out of the first time when they emerged back at the junction they headed right back onto fire road for the final time then back onto nature trail, following the single track back to junction, taking a final right out onto the road to finish line back at phone box. We had a trio of athletes take part in this one, Willie O’Donoghue who finished 10th overall and took a category win followed by Jason Collins in 12th position, rounding out the trio was Aoife Courtney who finished 4th lady. We had one man on volunteering duty today on the registration table was Tom Blackburn.
