RESURFACING PATRICK STREET ‘A MULTI-MILLION EURO PROJECT’

The resurfacing of Patrick Street, Fermoy which has been called for multiple times, will be a ‘multi-million euro project’ according to Cork County Council officials.

Senior Engineer with Cork County Council, Brendan O’Gorman has told councillors that a larger capital project will be required if the entirety of Patrick Street is to be resurfaced due to the large cost of the project.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn tabled a motion at this month’s meeting of the Fermoy Municipal District seeking that the council once again call on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to make the necessary funding available to improve the road surface at Patrick Street in the interest of safety. “It’s going on for far too long. Here we have been let down by the TII time and time again,” Cllr O’Flynn said.

Speaking at the online meeting, Cllr Noel McCarthy supported the motion stating that the matter is now ‘frustrating’ as the main street in Fermoy is in ‘appaling condition’.

“The N72 is coming right through our town and our town is suffering and the people of the town don’t deserve this,” Cllr McCarthy said.

Responding to the motion, Mr O’Gorman noted that there are several sections of the N72 requiring work, adding that TII had previously provided funding for small sections of work to be completed.

While Cllr O’Flynn agreed that partial funding would ‘ help’ the situation on Patrick Street, he impressed the need to write to TII seeking complete works for the area.

“Partial funding will be some help but I think until there is an overall paving job done on all of Patrick Street, a proper job will not be done,” Cllr O’Flynn said.

Cllr Noel McCarthy welcomed the applications for funding for partial works on Patrick Street, pointing to the stretch of road from the Mostly Just €2 Store towards the courthouse as being the ‘ worst section’.

Confirming the claim, Mr O’Gorman noted that there is an ‘ old legacy trench’ on this portion of the road and that to resurface all of Patrick street would be a multi-million euro project.

Mr O’Gorman added that there is currently no capital resurfacing project planned for the area and that the council would seek emergency funding to complete smaller sections of the road.
