Local Gardaí seeking help for commemoration events
Fermoy Gardaí is seeking the assistance of the local community in relation to the 100 Year Anniversary of An Garda Síochana which takes place this year.
According to Fermoy Community Garda Conor Gately, local events will be held to mark the milestone in the nation’s history.
“We are looking forward to commemorating this with the community we proudly serve. One national event will be the unveiling of a memorial for all members of An Garda Síochána who died while in service over the last 100 years.
“Fermoy Community Policing are trying to get in touch with families of deceased members we have already identified who served in this area in the past, but who died while still serving members of the organisation,” Garda Gately said.
Members of the local Retired Members Association have dusted off their detective skills, to see if they can identify any family members of deceased Gardaí still in the area.
“Some of these Gardaí will have served here as far back as the first half of the twentieth century. In the decades that have passed, families may have moved on, or in some cases, those Gardaí we are hoping to commemorate may never have had family links in the area,” Garda Gately added.
INFORMATION
Anyone who thinks they know of a family member who Gardaí can commemorate as part of the event, is asked to get in touch with Fermoy or Mitchelstown Community Gardaí or e-mail the District HQ at Fermoy_DS@garda.ie
“We would also be grateful to receive any photographs or memorabilia we can use (and return) for our local commemorations. Photos, press cuttings or anything related to Gardaí in the wider Fermoy Garda District would be welcome and taken care of.
“We look forward to remembering our proud history with our community in the coming months,” Garda Gately concluded.
