Fermoy Farmers’ Market set to move to Mill Island

- KATIE GLAVIN

Fermoy Farmers Market is gearing up to return to the town with a new location at Mill Island car park.

The market, which began at Richmond House in Fermoy, will now be moving to a more central location, kicking off the new season on May 14 with hopes of growing and expanding the bi-monthly market.

According to Enda Joyce of Fermoy Farmers’ Market, while opening day at Mill Island will see 12 stalls set up, it is hoped that over 20 stalls will be running within the first few months.

“At Mill Island, with the future development of the town and the development nearby, we’re hoping the market will have good footfall.

It’s a very central location, it’s a beautiful spot with the sound of the river, you can’t ask for any more.

“We were in Richmond House, they were very good to us and we’ll continue to support one another in the future. We want to thank Fiachra and Debbie Ó Cinnéide for all their efforts and for letting us trade at their beautiful home,” Enda said.

‘A GOOD VIBE’

Speaking with The Avondhu, Ann Mason of Fermoy Farmers’ Market said that familiar faces will be rejoining the market at their location, along with some newcomers.

Ann noted that the Market boasts a variety of homemade, handmade, homegrown, recycled, upcycled and artisan goods and are welcoming all those who may wish to get involved to get in contact.

Having grown significantly since their origin at Richmond House in 2020, last Christmas saw one of their biggest markets yet, welcoming students from local schools to exhibit their mini-company projects and local musicians to busk on-site, an aspect of the market that they hope to continue.

“We’re welcoming local musicians, young people who are into music who might want to come down on the bus for a day to make a few bob for themselves, we’re all for that.

“Midleton and Killavullen have a market, and we need to have these things for our town to develop and to move it on. It gives people something to do on a Saturday, to come down and walk around. It’s another option and it’s a good vibe,” Enda added.

Local councillor Noel McCarthy said that having spoken to the Fermoy Farmers’ Market about potential locations, he believes that Mill Island car park is an ideal spot.

“I think it’s a great location in the heart of the town. Like every other town that has a market, I think Fermoy will benefit immensely from this. It will bring more footfall to the town and hopefully encourage people from outside of town to come and visit Fermoy on a Saturday morning, do their business there and look forward to the market, but shop after in our town or have a coffee here.

“I want to thank my colleagues in Cork County Council and the Municipal Authority for supporting the idea and to Pauline Moriarty and the executive team for helping and supporting Fermoy Farmers’ Market. I think it’s good for Fermoy and I wish the market well. I think in the years to come it will grow and grow and I think that’s what Fermoy wants,” Cllr McCarthy said.
