Campervan parking remains on trial basis

- KATIE GLAVIN

The campervan parking previously available on Upper Kevin Barry Hill in Fermoy was on trial last summer, with the trial ending in September of 2021, Cork County Council has confirmed.

This follows a video shared online by Aaron Burchael of the popular YouTube channel ‘Charlie and Me’ who recently paid a visit to the facility but subsequently had to leave Fermoy, with many as 16 cars parked in the campervan parking area at the time.

Last week, The Avondhu reported on the issue and since, road markings indicating the campervan parking space in Upper Kevin Barry Hill as car park spaces have been changed. New road markings are also now in place on Rathealy Road, where the facility is being moved to have.

The new campervan parking facility at Rathealy Road is understood to be in place on a trial basis for Summer 2022, with bye-laws required if it is to remain there long term and if further services and facilities are to be provided on site.

Despite the campervan parking trial in the central car park having ended, it is understood that some campervan and motorhome enthusiast sites and apps still have the facility listed as open for use.

‘NOISY’ AND ‘DANGEROUS’

Members of the public were unhappy with the previous location at Upper Kevin Barry Hill according to councillor Frank O’Flynn, as it was on a slope and difficult for larger vehicles to access.

“The council agreed to a trial period on the Ballyduff road entrance to Fermoy. It’s overnight parking for a short term stay. Comments so far are that it is an ideal location, just a short walk from the centre of the town but that it is noisy and it is dangerous because of the traffic.

“I look forward to getting the views of the residents and campervan owners which I will bring back to council. After we do the trial in a number of areas, I feel it is important that we would come to an agreement and put in the proper facilities and services needed,” Cllr O’Flynn said.
