Best wishes to the children of Killavullen NS who are the first bunch of children since 2019 to receive Communion for the first time at the traditional time of year. The people of the Parish would like to wish you every happiness on this special day.

DARKNESS INTO LIGHT

Darkness into Light is an annual fundraiser for Pieta House. Founded in Dublin in 2006, Pieta was established to provide free, accessible one-to-one counselling to people suffering from suicidal ideation, engaging in self-harm or to those bereaved by suicide. With over 200 qualified therapists across 15 physical centres, we do everything we can to ensure that help is available to those in crisis. In 2009, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, 400 people set off on the inaugural Darkness Into Light 5km walk to raise funds for Pieta. From small beginnings, the movement has continued to grow, and around 200,000 people now take part in the event annually.

Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been impacted by suicide. A team of dedicated volunteers, in Ireland and overseas, return year on year to make the event a success and to help raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm.

Since Darkness Into Light began, supporters have raised almost €29 million, which has enabled them to keep their doors and our 24/7 helpline open for people in crisis, free of charge. Darkness Into Light 2022, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, will take place at sunrise on the morning of 7th May.

This year, people can gather together at the usual Darkness Into Light venues and walk to watch the sunrise or as has been done during the pandemic, you and supporters are asked to don your yellow t-shirts and take part in the event at a time and in a location that suits them. Walk, swim, bike or simply share your sunrise moment. Get creative with your activity, and remember that no matter how you choose to take part this year, you’ll be giving the gift of hope to those in your community in suicidal crisis, or self-harming.

Over the last 2 years people in our Parish gathered but remained apart in solidarity remembering and sending a united message of hope, that there is light after every darkness. You can sign up online https://www.darknessintolight.ie or make a donation through the Darkness into Light website.

All those walking or running for the event should ensure that their route is properly lit at the time they plan to take part and that there are no hazards. Pieta House in Cork can be contacted at Pieta Cork Shanakiel, Sunday’s Well, Cork T23 P865. 021-4395333.

Blackwater Cycling Club is a non-competitive club started in our community for cycling enthusiasts in Killavullen and the surrounding areas. With the weather continuing to be nice throughout the week we have some mid-week club activity ahead also...

On Tuesday evenings at 7pm there will be some groups leaving the hall in Killavullen for the first Tuesday evening spin this year. All new members welcome - this will be a relaxed pace and a nice route. Depending on numbers and abilities there may be a few groups and on Thursday evening at 7pm will have our 2nd week of our Killavullen Circuit. After a very successful first week we are expecting a few more members, old and new to take part. It is a bit of fun and a great way to challenge yourself! All members of all abilities are welcome to be part of this!

We hope to see you all there....and as always....no helmet no spin!

A few weeks ago some of our club members and friends took part in the Climb With Charlie national event in aid of Pieta and Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Below is a small selection of the photos that were taken on the day of our “Cycle, Hike, Cycle” event.

On behalf of Blackwater Cycling Club, and the brains behind the operation Jerry Mullane, we would like to thank the following people for their generous help and support on the day....

Kieran Horgan from The Arches Bar for the use of their car parking facilities. Gordon O’Keeffe from K&l Deliveries Ltd for allowing us to store our bikes at their facilities in Millstreet on the day Helen, Eilish and Carol for supplying the much needed tea, sandwiches and buns in Millstreet.

We would especially like to thank everyone that participated on the day - our own club members and friends and especially to our neighbouring club Awbeg Free Wheelers Cycling Club for being part of the day. And most of all we would like express our sincerest gratitude to all those who donated on our page to this very worthy cause - in total, your donations amounted to a grand total of €1115 - thank you all so much!

And finally, we would like to thank our very own Jerry Mullane for, as we said earlier, being the brains of this operation. Without him, this event would not have happened, so from all of us here in the club, thank you Jerry!!
