- BY PADDY RYAN

Charleville 5-19 Fermoy 1-17 Two goals in the opening minutes of the second half by Mark Kavanagh helped Charleville run out comfortable winners over Fermoy in the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division 1 HL tie at Fermoy on Saturday. The opening half was keenly contested and at the break the sides couldn’t be separated.

The winners had some very good displays by Danny Flynn, Sean Buckley, Killian Cagney, Shane Liddy, Jamie Coughlan, Mark Kavanagh, James O’Brien and David Forde, while Brian Shanahan, David O’Callaghan, Cillian Fitzpatrick, Cian Condon and the Aherne brothers, Luke and Arlene, were equally as effective for the home side.

At the end of the first quarter the sides were level for the first time at 0-4 each. David O’Callaghan edged Fermoy in front again with a point before Charleville struck for the game’s opening goal in the 17th minute, when Oisin O’Callaghan and Danny Flynn combined well in the backline and it eventually resulted in David Forde finishing to net - 1-4 to 0-5.

Fermoy’s response was instant and two well taken frees by Cillian Fitzpatrick from difficult angles restored parity. The home side hit the front again in the 20th minute when Cillian Fitzpatrick set up Padraig Shanahan for a well taken goal.

Exchanges were keenly contested in the run up to the break. Fermoy maintained a three points cushion by the 26th minute when leading by 1-9 to 1-6, but three points before the interval by Killian Cagney, Mark Kavanagh and James O’Brien tied matters at 1-9 apiece at the break.

GOALS THE DIFFERENCE

On the changeover Charleville dominated from the throwin. In the 33rd minute a free by Killian Cagney was gathered by David Forde who set up Mark Kavanagh who finished to the net from close range. Kavanagh added a third for his side two minutes later when he drilled a free to the net (3-10 to 1-9).

Fermoy stayed in touch when Cillian Fitzpatrick (2) and Cian O’Brien had points, but a ‘hattrick’ of goals from Mark Kavanagh by the 41st minute opened up a 4-11 to 1-11 lead.

Over the next ten minutes Cillian Fitzpatrick, David Forde, Mark Kavanagh, Eoin Canty, Jamie Coughlan and David O’Callaghan traded points as Charleville maintained their three goal lead.
