Rian bags the car in Cavanagh’s draw
There was a great turnout in Cavanagh’s of Fermoy on Friday night, April 22 as six clubs were in the running to win the top prize of a car at the league winner’s draw, generously sponsored by Cavanagh’s.
Between the clubs, Avondhu GAA Board members and staff of Cavanagh’s, excitement was rife to see who would be called on the final ticket as the overal winner of a car.
Kicking off at 7.30pm, the first of two draws began with 18 names going forward for the grand draw that saw 17 consolation prizes dished out, and of course, the grand prize awarded to the very last name to be called on the night.
“There was a certain amount of excitement on the night. The draw is done in reverse and all the tickets are put into special plastic containers and put into a drum and spun around to be mixed up,” Cavanagh’s Sales Manager, Conor O’Keeffe told TheAvondhu.
“We invited different people from the different clubs to the draw to pull out the tickets and there was a bit of rivalry between clubs, hoping they would pull out certain tickets. The tension got more and more, the closer we got to the final three,” he added.
When it came down to the last three names, John Courtney, Avondhu GAA secretary, read the names aloud, with Shanballymore GAA Club members being called on two of the tickets.
The second and third place winners both received consolation prizes of €1,000 each, while each of the remainder of the top 18 in the second draw received prizes of €250, with the winner claiming the car.
“The draw was instigated by Tom Cavanagh a long time ago and it’s been running for more than ten years now. The premise is that each team that won a league gets a chance to sell tickets, and we put the prizes up free of charge.
“The draw was designed to make the leagues more competitive. Normally, the draw takes place the year after the league, but because of Covid, we couldn’t have the draw in 2020 and 2021 so this was for the 2019 league winners,” Mr O’Keeffe said.
