Araglin 4-16 Mallow 1-08

Araglin were in scoring form when they faced Mallow in Araglin on Tuesday evening. Over the hour, Mallow’s second string were no match for the home side, who cracked home 4 killer goals, as well as some excellent long range points.

With a couple of players ‘caught in traffic’ (not in Araglin) and with referee, John O’Brien, eager to commence at the appointed 7.30pm throw in time, a less than fully fit Simon Walsh fell in for wing back, Sean Motherway. Once Sean touched down, he was introduced for Simon. Captain Ben Carey, led by example and shot over our first point. Jack Kearney then pointed, before goaling, after good work by corner forward, Jake Buckley, son of selector, Pa - this was all after just 10 minutes. Oisin Hickey, who lined out at centre forward, then converted a long range free. Lively wing forward, Paul Hynes, popped up with a nice point, before Mallow goaled on the 13th minute mark. This made it 1-04 to 1-01.

Our fifth point was a free, courtesy of Jack Kearney. Mallow could have been closer to us at this stage, if it was wasn’t for a great save by Sean Og O’Doherty in his debut season at adult level. He would go on to pull off another couple of vital saves. Keelan O’Gorman, son of our other selector, Seamie, also got on the score sheet with a sweetly struck point. The next man up was wing back, Peter Finn, who had a very good first half and nailed a point from around the 65 metre mark. Ben Carey got our 7th point, Jack converted a free and further white flags from Sean Hegarty and Ben brought our total to 1-11 after half an hour. We led at the interval 1-11 to 1-02.

3 SECOND HALF GOALS DO THE DAMAGE

Oisin got us off the mark after the resumption with a pointed effort. This was followed in short order by a goal from poacher in chief, Dave Browne. The best move of the game then followed, this started back in defence, with Shay Russell winning possession. The sliotar was transferred to Peter Finn, who picked out Dave Browne, who in turn set up Jack Kearney, who made no mistake from close range.

We were well on the way to victory at this stage. Keelan O’Gorman, who played well, added to his first half point, before Ben raised another white flag. Paul Hynes, who posed a big threat up front, goaled and pointed in quick succession to ‘ put the game to bed’. Jack Keraney closed things out with a pointed free. Mallow recorded 6 second half points to give them a total of 1-08.

GOOD PROGRESS

While beating a club’s second team isn’t the greatest achievement ever, it was heartening to see us improve on previous outings. Sean Og was very good in goals and our two corner backs were equally efficient. Niall O’Sullivan had his best game to date, with seasoned defender Liam Keane, also giving coach, Shane Hickey and his selectors something to think about. Shay anchored the defence and looked comfortable all through. The performances of our half back line, Peter Finn, Cain O’Mahony and Sean Motheway, was another reason why Mallow found it so hard to score. Peter, who plays rugby with Fermoy, has a lot of the attributes to be a high grade hurler.

Paul Hynes, Oisin and Dave Browne all got on the scoresheet, ably assisted by Jack Kearney (wearing number 14) who emerged as top scorer, with the corner forward positions occupied by Jake Buckley and Keelan O’Gorman. Sean Motherway came on for Simon Walsh (injured), with Laurence Lomasney taking over from Dave Browne in the second half.

Match referee was John O’Brien (Ballygiblin).

Scorers: Jack Kearney (2-04, 04 from frees), Ben Carey (0-04), Paul Hynes (1-02), Keelan O’Gorman (0-02), Oisin Hickey (0-02, 01, a free), Dave Browne (1-00), Peter Finn (0-01), Sean Hegarty (0-01).
