Great display from senior hurlers

-

Fermoy 2-15 Na Piarsaigh 1-12

On a cool but beautiful evening in Fermoy we took on the challenge of the Na Piarsaigh boys from Farrenree in the County Hurling League. After our very brave performance against the Rockies a few weeks ago, we were really looking forward to a tough hours hurling where we hoped to give a creditable account of ourselves. We need not have worried as from the start to the end the Fermoy boys gave a display of tough spirited hurling with oodles of skill that gladdened the hearts of all our supporters present. This league has so far been a great learning experience for our team who we are now witnessing displaying serious talent.

The game began at a rip roaring pace with both sides fighting for the early advantage. Na Piarsaigh got the scoring up and running with a point from play on 2 mins before Brian O’Sullivan opened our account on 3 mins with a point from play. Na P. then put over a point on 3 mins but then Fermoy took control of the scoring holding our opponents scoreless until the 19th minute. Martin Brennan got our equalising point on 4 mins then Jake Carr struck over a free on 9 mins. Almost from the puck out Fermoy won the breaking ball and after some quick inter-changing of passes the ball found its way to Jake who crashed it in to the back of the net. There followed 3 points after this from Martin, Brian and Darragh Daly on 10, 13 and 14 mins. We stunned our opponents on 18 mins when we scored our second goal and it was that mighty man Jake who notched up his second goal of the game.

The score line was Fermoy 2-06 Na Piarsaigh 0-02 after 19 mins. This was excellent hurling from Fermoy with our defence playing out of their skins, midfield in total control and our forwards running riot. Na P stemmed the flow of scores on 19 mins with a point but Jake cancelled that out with a close in free. They scored a free on 22 mins but almost immediately this was cancelled out by an excellent point from Kieran Morrisson. A mistake in defence was punished by our visitors when they struck for a goal on 26 mins to give them a bit of hope for the second half. Brian O’Sullivan kept us ticking over with his second point on 27 mins but it was Na Piarsaigh who had the final say of the first half when they scored a point on 30 mins. The half time whistle blew and it was time for everyone to take a breather and hope that we could keep up this excellent display in the second half. Half time: Fermoy 2-09 Na Piarsaigh 1-05.

It was important for us to start the second half at full throttle and we certainly did that by scoring the first point through a Jake free on 32 mins. Our opponents grabbed the next two points on 33 and 35 mins respectively but we retaliated with two points of our own in the 40th min by Padraig de Roiste and Liam Coleman in the 41st min. They got a point in the 44th minute but Darragh grabbed his second point on 45 mins to cancel out their score. We made it 2-14 to 1-08 with a Jake point from play in the 48th minute.

At this stage Fermoy were really enjoying themselves and playing some lovely hurling interchanging passes all over the pitch. Some of these moves broke down and our opponents took advantage of this. They rattled off three points in succession from the 49th minute to the 51st min. Fermoy realised that we needed to tighten up and we did so by not conceding again until the 59th min. A Jake free on 56 mins ended our scoring for the evening before our opponents finished the scoring for the match with a point on 59 mins. The final whistle blew for the end of the match and we went home very happy indeed. This was an extremely satisfactory result and tells us that we are heading in the right direction. Our next hurling fixture is against Midleton on Saturday 7th May and I’m sure we are all looking forward to that. Well done to everyone on a fantastic game of hurling and let there be many more. Fermoy Abu!
