AWAY WIN FOR U15 FOOTBALLERS IN R2 OF THE MR BINMAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Galtee Gaels 6-8 Ahane 5-3

On Monday evening last Galtee Gaels U15 footballers made the trip to Ahane seeking to exert revenge for the time the sides last met, when Ahane beat Galtee Gaels by a point with an injury time goal in the Féile competition played in March.

From the throw in Gaels went on the attack and within 5 minutes Sean Gallaghue had a goal and a point on the score sheet. Galtee Gaels continued to carve open the Ahane defence and a well taken point from Paul Quane from out on the wing was followed in quick succession by two superb goals from Tommy English and Eoghan Fitzgerald respectively.

Ahane’s opening score didn’t come until the 14 minute when they scored a goal against the run of play. On the 17th minute Eoghan Fitzgerald found the net again followed by point from Paul Quane. Conor McNamara finished out the half with the side’s fifth goal of the game leaving the half-time score reading 5-3 to 1-1 if favour of Galtee Gales.

Ahane came out fighting in the 2nd half and within 3 minutes clocked up 2-2 without reply to put a different complexion on the game leaving just 6 points between the sides.

With their tails up Ahane went on the attack again but an excellent save by Jack Prendergast 7 minutes into the half followed by 2 points by Scott Reidy quelled this momentum. Gales got back in control again and stretched their lead further with Eoghan Fitzgerald’s thrid goal of the game followed by a point from Maurice Fitzgerald.

With Gaels now leading on double scores, 6-6 to 3-3, midway through the 2nd half one would be forgiven for thinking Gaels had the game in the bag but Ahane were not finished and came back into the game with two further goals leaving just 6 between the teams and 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

Gaels however kept battling and despite missing a penalty Eoghan Fitzgerald closed out the game with two further points in what was another fine performance from him, with a personal tally of three goals and two points. The final scoreline read Galtee Gaels 6-8, Ahane 5-3.

Team members: Jack Prendergast, Kevin O’Mahony, Tommy English, Cathal Maher, Liam O’Donnell, Sean Gallaghue, Conor McNamara, Maurice Fitzgerald, Sean O’Donnell, Scott Reidy, Eoghan Fitzgerald, Robbie Ryan, Paul Quane, Padraig Moriarty, Cormac Kearney, Haulie Gallaghue, Liam Bourke, Edward Moriarty and Padraig Casey.
