Under 7s strike out

-

The U7s group which includes some younger lads have been training hard recently and have benefitted from some extra coaching from Mickey “Da” Fitzgerald. Their sliotar-striking has been improving after some sessions with the old tyres which have taken a considerable beating. The boys love their hurling and look forward to some friendly matches with neighbouring clubs in the weeks ahead.

The U9 boys travelled to St Colman’s pitches for a football match against their Fermoy counterparts at the beginning of the Easter Holidays. As usual, Fermoy put out strong teams but the Glanworth lads performed well and showed great skill in an evenly-matched contest. Last weekend the two teams met again, this time in hurling, when Fermoy visited Glanworth. Both clubs benefited from good numbers which allowed for the groups to be split into two teams. Both teams had two matches which gave plenty of variety to the players and spectators on a fine, sunny morning.

SPONSORED WALK

The Juvenile Committee organised the annual Sponsored Walk which took place on Sunday to round out the Easter holidays. This was the Juvenile Club’s main fundraiser for 2022 and the boys were asked to seek sponsorship for the walk over the Easter period. The walk itself was very well-attended by the Juvenile members and their families. It began from the clubhouse on a bright and breezy Sunday morning and proceeded down to the village, via the Community Hall, as far as McDonnell’s before returning back to base again. The kids, marshals and parents all enjoyed refreshments and treats on their return.

Cork hurler, Ciarán Joyce, dropped in after training with the county team to say hi to all the walkers and signed autographs on hurleys, helmets, sliotars and even hands! Ciarán was very generous with his time and encouraged the young people to listen to their coaches and to keep practising to hone their skills. Before he left, Ciarán presented each walker with a new sliotar courtesy of the Juvenile Committee.

The Juvenile Committee were hugely appreciative of the financial support from this key fundraiser. The money collected (which is currently being counted) will fund new and upgraded training equipment like footballs, sliotars, drill equipment, and so on, for Juvenile members. The committee thanks all of those who volunteered to help on the day, whether it was marshalling, baking, makings teas and coffees or clearing up afterwards. There will be a prize of a voucher for a new hurley for the boy in each agegroup who collected the most sponsorship. The prizes were generously donated by Eugene Sweeney of Sweeney Hurleys in Kildorrery.
