Juvenile athletes compete in Leevale Sports

-

Last Saturday, MTU hosted Leevale Sports, which was really well organized and drew a large crowd. The sun shone brightly, making it ideal for both athletes and spectators.

Leevale, Togher, Belgooly, Tracton AC, Skibbereen, Blarney, North Cork, Fanahan McSweeney’ Grange AC, to name a few, were among the Cork clubs in attendance. On the day, the club had six athletes, and Ann O’Flynn and Kealan O’Connor were on hand to look after them.

U12 Henry Bagnall competed in the long jump and finished joint third in the high jump. He qualified for the final of the 60m sprint and finished fifth in the 60m hurdles. Henry has excellent hurdle speed and technique, well done Henry.

U13 Dylan Magorrian competed in the 80m sprint. He came 4th in the high jump, and 5th in the javelin. He stated that his favourite event is the high jump, and that he will benefit from some practice in the coming weeks because it is all new to him. Great work Dylan.

U13 Alex Bagnall, competed in the 80m sprint and qualified for the final. She also competed in the long jump, where she showed remarkable potential in terms of height and technique. She also competed in the 80m hurdles which had a big number of competitors.

U14 Sean Magorrian, competed in the 80m sprint and qualified for the final. He subsequently competed in the long jump and finished fourth in the javelin, which he enjoys. If Sean practices the proper technique it will make all the difference to him as he has good height. Congratulations Sean, making the finals on your first day out is a huge accomplishment.

U15 Meabh O’Connor did the 100m sprint and was unlucky not to make the final. In the 800m she finished 4th and had a very strong race and a strong finish as she’s improving with every race.

U15 Rachel O’Flynn competed in the 100m sprint. She was 2nd in the 800m race. Lauren Dinan from Leevale went out fast and led the race from the start; opening a 15m gap, Rachel and Lauren’s twin Ella battled away behind her; at 150m Rachel picked up the pace and had a strong finish to take 2nd.

It was Dylan and Sean’s first experience of the track and they both really enjoyed trying all the different track and field events. It was a great day out and congratulations to all our athletes.
