Thanks to the team made up of Liam Ahearne, Sean Daly, Pat Fleming and Billy Ormonde who finished off the work on the new compost bays in the Millennium Park. Information signage will put up at the site in the coming weeks.
Weeds are thriving with the present warm weather so other tidy towns members have been busy weeding various planted areas. To attract bees and other pollinating insects Lismore Tidy Towns has planted a Nepeta/Catmint hedge at the Chapel Street entrance to Lios an Oir.
Our two CE workers Jim Noonan and Kieran Fraher are doing a lot of painting in public spaces in Lismore’s environs with Jim continuing to paint the many junction boxes and Kieran has started the preparatory work for painting the exterior of the WeighHouse at Ballyrafter.
On 20th April a research group from University College London Centre for Biodiversity and Environmental Research published a study which discovered that climate change and intensive agricultural land use have already been responsible for a 49% reduction in the number of insects in the most impacted parts of the world.
This study is the first to identify that an interaction between rising temperatures and land use changes is driving widespread losses in numerous insect groups across the globe. The research has highlighted the urgency of actions to preserve natural habitats, slow the expansion of high intensity agriculture and cut emissions to mitigate climate change.
In reaching their conclusions the researchers analysed a large data set of insect abundance and species richness from areas across the world including three quarters of a million records for nearly 20,000 insect species.
