Welcome for rezoning near Corrin

- MARIAN ROCHE

The way is paved for expansion in the Corrin area of Fermoy, as rezoning proposals for two tracts of land were voted in favour of last week.

One of these tracts of land is by Cork Marts, where the foundations have been laid for an NCT centre after a motion to rezone land was passed at a meeting of Cork County Council. With 46 votes in favour of the motion, and commentary widely in favour of the move, the rezoning proposal was passed with positivity.

Cllr Kay Dawson, who proposed the motion back in December and spoke in favour again last week of the move, made reference to her own ‘old car’ when she called for the rezoning. Any NCT centre is now the subject of the normal planning process, should it be sought.

Cllr Dawson, making reference to any misgiving that the TII may have about increased traffic in the area, said that she was glad to see it passed regardless, and that the TII could ‘have their say’ at the planning stage now.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn, speaking with The Avondhu, stated that the NCT service had already been in contact and expressed interest in developing a testing site at Corrin. He welcomed the move, saying that Cork Marts had a strong track record of delivering “quality NCT centres, and it’s an absolutely ideal location.”

When contacted by The Avondhu, a spokesperson for the NCT said that no plans were in place as of yet, but that they were considering ‘all options’ when it comes to the rollout of any new NCT centres.

INDUSTRIAL REZONING

A short distance up the road from Cork Marts, rezoning for industrial use was also passed at Corrin near the site of a number of existing businesses including South Coast and Veolia. This motion for rezoning had previously been proposed by Cllr O’Flynn in December, and he said he was delighted to see the rezoning pass.

“It’s an opportune site, ideally located with all facilities and businesses right alongside ready to expand. Fermoy has a young, flexible workforce and it couldn’t be better. It’s the kind of development we need for Fermoy.”

The new County Development Plan comes into play on 6th June, after which planning for any development on rezoned lands can be applied for through the normal manner.
