Golfing fundraiser for St Patrick’s restoration fund
St. Patrick’s Church in Fermoy holds great memories for thousands of local people who celebrated peak moments of their lives in this sacred place.
The church is central to the lives of the Fermoy and surrounding communities since its completion in the 1820s but now, over two hundred years later this architectural treasure requires significant refurbishment and restoration both externally and internally at a cost of circa €1.8m.
To this end, the parish has established a fundraising drive to assist in funding the works. A subcommittee of avid golfers has been assembled with a view to running a golf classic to contribute to the careful restoration of this magnificent building. The focus of the restoration is to retain its original architectural features and be a suitable memorial to our ancestors, who in the most difficult of times in our history, succeeded in building this church. The renovations will ensure the continuation of St Patrick’s Church for future generations.
We are happy to confirm that Rathcormac Tyres in the person of proprietor Pat Whelan has offered to come on board as title sponsors and Fermoy Golf Club has been confirmed as the location for the classic on Friday, September 9.
While planning has only started, it is intended that the classic will be played as a three-ball with prizes for both players who are, and are not, members of Golf Ireland affiliated clubs. While it may not be as old as the church itself, Fermoy Golf Club is celebrating 130 years in existence in 2022 and is rated as one of the best and most picturesque courses in Munster, drawing great praise from all who play it.
Speaking as the plans were formulated, Parish Administrator, Fr Brian Boyle stated that while he is not a golfer himself, he understands the fascination with the game. He hopes that parishioners and friends of St. Patrick’s Church and the entire parish will support this initiative, while also enjoying a wonderful day out.
