Several Darkness into Light events locally

Darkness into Light events will be going ahead over the next few days in many areas throughout the region.

In Lismore, the ‘Candles of Hope’ event will start at 9pm on this Friday, May 6 at the Millennium Park in the town. This will see as many as 700 candles and night lights adorning the park and the monument until dawn on May 7, coinciding with the Darkness into Light walk that leaves the park at 4.45am.

The event will take a 5km trip on the Mayfield/ Owbeg route, finishing back at the park.

MITCHELSTO­WN

Mitchelsto­wn’s Darkness into Light will take place this coming Friday evening, with participan­ts taking off from Mitchelsto­wn Leisure Centre at 4.15am.

Parking is available at both CBS and outside Tesco, and registrati­on is open from 3.30am. The group is walking “in solidarity with people across Ireland and from around the World.”

“We look forward to meeting and greeting old friends and new, and moving forward in hope from darkness into Light. All monies are donated to Pieta House to provide counsellin­g for people who are self harming or experienci­ng suicidal ideation,” volunteer Michelle Cooke told TheAvondhu.

“Let’s all shine a light together.”

FERMOY

In Fermoy, the walk will get underway at 4.15am at the Fermoy GAA grounds, with upwards of 500 people already registered for the event. In a new departure for the event, both Castlelyon­s Gospel Choir and Fermoy Internatio­nal Choir will provide music along the route.

Leaving the sports facility, the walk will lead down Oliver Plunkett Hill, turning right at Pearse Square onto Cork Road, then onto Duntaheen Road doing a loop incorporat­ing Barry’s Boreen, before rejoining the Cork road near Texaco and returning back to the Fermoy GAA grounds.

GLENVILLE

Glenville Darkness into Light walk in aid of Pieta House will set out at 5am on Saturday.

Walkers will meet at the Church of Ireland at the top of the village and walk to Doonpeter Graveyard and Holy Well from there.

WATERGRASS­HILL

Watergrass­hill is also getting in on the national fundraiser with the local group there to meet at the school at 4.30am on Saturday morning.

From here, walkers will do a loop of the village and walk through Ard Cashel, before finishing at the Fir Tree where a coffee trailer will be on-site to serve teas and coffees.

GLANMIRE

Glanmire Darkness into Light will kick off at 4.15am from Glanmire Community College, where it will also finish. Teas and coffees will be available in the gym at the college following the walk, where there will also be a donation bucket.

CASTLELYON­S

Castlelyon­s will see its local walk get underway at 4am in Fr Ferris Field, taking in a loop of the graveyard and returning again to the starting point.

Locals undertakin­g the Castlelyon­s Darkness into Light are advised that no money will be taken on the morning of the walk and that all donations are to be made online.
