Snooker legend coming to Mitchelstown
Something I thought I would never get to either write or say but ‘the Whirlwind is coming to town’. Iconic snooker legend Jimmy White will arrive in the town square next Wednesday evening (May 11th) and will play a number of two frame pool matches in the home of competitive pool, Miko’s Bar.
Like many other snooker players in the professional game, including another legend Steve Davis, who also came to play in Miko’s Bar a few years back, Jimmy White has played and showed his pool skills in both Asia and 9-ball pool in America.
So local players taking him on next Wednesday night will without doubt have a mountain to climb if they are to have any success. Unfortunately for those who would like to attend, it’s not good news as all seats have been snapped up along with the meet and greet places. All gone within a couple of hours. A great night of fun and entertainment is on the cards for all in attendance to watch ‘The Whirlwind’ make the cue and white ball do the talking.
BRIAN MCGRATH MEMORIAL POOL CLASSIC
Due to the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, we were left with no other option but to postpone the competition at the quarter-final stages indefinitely. After almost a two-year wait we got the competition back on track late last January and to the players great credit, all 16 returned to compete in both the pool classic and B competition quarter-finals. A report on the closing stages, the final and photographs will be with TheAvondhu shortly and will hopefully appear in next week’s edition.
SPRING POOL CLASSIC
Having returned to competitive pool last January and completing the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the Brian McGrath Memorial Pool Classic, the vast majority of players starved of competition pool wanted more. So a new competition, Spring Pool Classic, was drawn up by the organisers and after completing the group and last 16 of the classic we are now at the quarter-final stages of both the pool classic and B competition.
22 of the 32 players that competed in the Brian McGrath Classic returned for the Spring Classic but within hours there were ten new players brought in with some real quality amongst them. A report on the group, knockout stages, final plus photographs will be with The Avondhu prior to deadline and will hopefully appear in the May 19th edition.
