Open week success at Kilfeacle Tennis Club

-

Last week, the annual Open week tournament at Kilfeacle took place. Mitchelstown had players involved in seven teams. It is a great sign to see that many of our members are interested in taking part in open competitions at other clubs. Thankfully, we had the great news that two pairings enjoyed championship success on finals day last Sunday.

In the grade 5 mixed doubles, Liam O’Grady and Evelyn English were victorious with a 6-2, 6-3 result in the final. Liam and Evelyn played very well throughout the competition, having to dig deep in their semi-final with a super set tie break win. This is Evelyn’s third open title this year, a great achievement, having been promoted to a grade 4 status recently.

In the grade 6 mixed doubles, Paddy Leonard and Marie O’Neill ended a remarkable run through the tournament by finishing as champions on Sunday. Their five match unbeaten record was impressive, holding off some strong pairings along the way. Mitchelstown had a good representation in this grade, with four pairings from the club participating out of a total of twenty two. Hopefully this success will encourage more members to have a go and enter future Opens during the summer.

BEGINNER TEEN TENNIS

There will be a beginner teen tennis class for members starting this coming Friday, 6th May 6-7pm. This will run for five weeks at a cost of €45. We encourage any new teenage members to take part, learn the skills of the game while meeting up with other members. It would be a great way to get started in the sport.

COACHING

A new 5 week term of coaching aimed at beginners and new members starts Friday 6th May, 7-8pm. Places are strictly limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. For further details or to book your place, see the link on the club WhatsApp group.

CLUB NIGHT

Our weekly club night continues this coming Friday night, May 6th at 8pm. It’s a sociable, casual, fun night of tennis, intended for members to meet other members and mix up to play doubles. It is open to all members. Anyone interested is encouraged to come along. SATURDAY JUNIOR MATCHPLAY

Every Saturday during school term, there will be matchplay practice for juniors. This is to help the juniors understand tennis matches, scoring, court etiquette, rules etc. At 2pm, it will be for ages 5-7. At 3pm, it will be for ages 8-12. These sessions do not replace the coaching on Wednesdays and the courts will be adult supervised. Numbers are limited, so registration is required at yourcourts.com.
