Footballers win on the double

-

DIVISION 2A FOOTBALL LEAGUE Glanworth 2-13 St Vincents 1-12

Our intermediate footballers travelled to St Vincents last Sunday to collect their 3rd win from 5 attempts after a very fine display. It was never going to be an easy challenge and we made things harder for ourselves with the start we got. We were four down after six minutes as we just struggled to settle. Once we did it became a great contest swinging one way and another.

By ten minutes we had halved the deficit with a fine taken point by Stevie Condon and an excellent free by Darragh O’Brien. They extended the lead to three but we were getting on top. Davy Pyne kicked a wonderful score and then kicked the first of his frees and when Stevie Condon kicked his second point of the day on 25 minutes the sides were level for the first time. They finished the half strongly with two points to leave it at the break 0-7 to 0-5. We were well in this match but we had to up the intensity. No more was this in evidence then our halfback line of Thomas Condon, Ger O’Neill and Jack Coughlan who worked their socks off. Special mention to Jack whose efforts resulted in numerous turnovers.

We were level within five minutes of the resumption with points from Jessie Walsh and Darragh O’Brien who are two young lads really playing well right now and once again on Sunday they really impressed. They hit two in a row but we replied with two frees from the cool as cucumber Davy Pyne. Then we hit the front for the first time with another excellent point from Darragh O’Brien but we were only ahead for two minutes when they were awarded a penalty which they duly dispatched. But the goal seemed to spur us on as our response was excellent. We scored 1-3 in the next ten minutes to leave us 4 ahead with 25 mins gone. All were different scorers as well as Davy Pyne kicked a free, Stephen Condon and Darragh O’Brien scored from play and then following excellent link play Emmett Sheehan rounded the keeper and blasted into the net.

Credit to St Vincents they didn’t give up and kicked three points in a row to leave one in it going into injury time. Then just as it looked to be a grandstand finish the ball landed to Darragh O’Brien who when it looked like he would clip it over the bar struck it beautifully into the bottom corner of the net. We had to hold out for a few minutes but when they struck a close in free wide the final whistle sounded and the points were in the bag. Well done to all involved.

Team: Ciaran Cotter, John Blackburn, William Blackburn, Colm Whelton, Thomas Condon, Ger O’Neill, Jack Coughlan, Ross Murphy, Podge Hannon, Jessie Walsh, Davy Pyne, Emmett Sheehan, Darragh O’Brien, John O’Sullivan and Stevie Condon. Subs used: Jamie Fogarty.

DIVISION TWO FOOTBALL LEAGUE Glanworth 2-9 Araglin 2-4

Our junior footballers continue their excellent form and made it 4 from 4 after defeating Araglin last Friday night. It hasn’t been easy by any means but the lads are made of stern stuff and keep digging out the wins. Before I start the report I want to say how good it was to see Niall Fogarty back in the starting line-up. He is a great lad and suffered a bad injury last year. So I am really looking forward to see him flying in the green and white this year.

The first half was tight and by the twentieth minute we were 3pts to 2 up. Our points coming from Jamie Fogarty, Aaron Noonan and Jack Blackburn. With 23 mins gone we were awarded a penalty which Podge Hannon slotted with ease. Jessie Walsh kicked a great point before the half ended leaving it at 1-4 to 0-2. We came out strong in the second half kicking the first four points of the half. Jack Blackburn a great point within a minute of the restart and two minutes later Jessie Walsh kicked another point. Six minutes in and Pierre O’Driscoll slotted a free and on twelve mins Harvey McGrath’s hard work was rewarded with a fine point. We made a few changed and got our rhythm a bit.

Araglin kicked two in a row to leave it seven points in it with ten to go. With seven to go Pierre O’Driscoll kicked a point and we looked to be heading to a fairly comfortable win. But Araglin had other ideas and struck for two goals in a minute. But our boys never panicked and continued to fight for the win. Deep into injury time we had a free. Pierre’s kick stuck the post and it was Aaron Noonan who was quickest to the rebound and slotted coolly into the back of the net to secure the win 2-9 to 2-4. A lot of players have been used so far so it is a credit to the squad and management they are 100% so far. Keep up the great work guys!

Team: Ciaran Cotter, Peter Condon, Bart O’Keeffe, Colm Clancy, Colm Whelton, Niall Fogarty, Marc Moloney, Rob O’Driscoll, Jessie Walsh, Pierre O’Driscoll, Jamie Fogarty, Podge Hannon, Aaron Noonan, Jack Blackburn and Harvey McGrath. Subs: Shay Coleman, Liam Cotter, Ian Dwyer, Jay O’Sullivan.
