Blackwater Divers assist in river clean-up

-

When requested to take part in the recent river Clean-Up as part of the Clean Coast campaign members were in no way slow to volunteer to assist. Blackwater Sub Aqua have been registered with Clean Coast Ireland for a while now and always have a practice in pricing debris and rubbish they come across when diving in the river as well as the sea.

The Clean Coasts programme works with communities to help protect and care for Ireland’s waterways, coastline, seas, ocean and marine life. With the help of thousands of volunteers, removing large quantities of marine litter from our rivers and coastline. Promoting and facilitating coastal clean-ups and marine litter surveys.

Last Thursday saw members from Blackwater Sub Aqua, Blackwater Kayaking Adventures, Blackwater Triathlon Club, Phoenix Kayak Club, Fermoy Tidy Towns and volunteering individuals who use the amenity. With groups assembling at 6.30 to get briefing, bags, cloves and litter pickers all set off to complete the cleanup. Working with a group of kayakers from Blackwater Kayaking Adventures the area covered was from the slip way at Brian Boru Square down to the hospital bend below the new motor way bridge.

With two of the club boats in the water and some of our divers wading through the shallows one wouldn’t expect to see such varied types of debris, from a car battery to council barriers, traffic cones to beer bottles and all trope of food wrapping. A great evenings work completed by the sub aqua members and kayakers, well done to all and as a club of the Blackwater River we look forward to the next cleanup event on July 28th. Again thanks to the volunteers of Blackwater Kayaking Adventures, Andrew Duggan, Eugene O’Keeffe, Dave Corbett, Colm Doyle, Josie Cassidy, Claire Hurley, Jane Flannery, Tom Cotter. Sub Aqua members on the night Eugene Whelan, Olan O’Farrell, Louise Feeney, Dom Bardyszewski, Finbarr Murphy, Des Browne and Dermot Barry.

On diving matters, members travelled to Kilcrohan and Cork harbour this weekend to get in some pleasurable dives, with visibility up to two meters and temperatures close to 10 degrees all have a very pleasurable dive, some of the trainee class of 2022 got in some more open water dives under supervision of instructors getting them one step closer to be diving buddy to buddy.

Congratulations to club search diver Finbarr Mulcahy and Rosarie Daly to got married last Saturday, wishing you both a long life of happiness.
