WATERFORD COUNCIL TO ‘RAMP UP’ CCTV FOR ILLEGAL DUMPING
With news that Cork County Council had pre-installed CCTV cameras in several dumping and littering blackspots in anticipation of the circular economy bill, councillors in Waterford have called for similar.
The topic was raised by Councillor Thomas Phelan this week at the Dungarvan Lismore District meeting, who asked whether Waterford City and County Council had taken similar steps.
Responding to the query, Raymond Moloney of Waterford City and County Council’s Environmental Department, stated that he was ‘not aware’ of any local authority pre-installing cameras.
PROCEDURES
While he acknowledged that it is something that the Dungarvan Lismore District would be interested in doing, he noted that there are certain procedures and permissions required before installing such cameras at litter and dumping blackspots.
Speaking at Monday’s meeting, Cllr Conor McGuinness supported the idea of installing cameras as soon as possible.
“I think it would be prudent for the local authority to start planning and rolling out at this stage,” he said.
In response, Mr Moloney stated: “Certainly we will look at ramping up in terms of CCTV and identifying locations, but there are specific procedures we have to follow”.
