Foggy start didn’t dampen Fermoy Darkness into Light
There was a great turnout to the Pieta House fundraiser, Darkness Into Light, in Fermoy last weekend.
Organised by Fermoy GAA, the event saw an estimated 650700 people turn out to support the cause and participate in the walk through the town.
Despite the fog, locals were in high spirits in the early hours with many standing out to cheer participants along the way.
Health and Wellbeing Officer with Fermoy GAA Martin Joyce thanked all those involved in the event, noting the community effort on the morning and stating that the event ‘went very well’.
Outside the CYMS Hall on MacCurtain Street, Fermoy International Choir sang for those taking part in the walk, while Castlelyons Gospel Choir took up position at Texaco on the Cork Road to encourage those along the way.
Local businesses also played their part with Route 57 and The Wagon Tavern setting up water stations; Brew Boys served coffee to those who waited at the GAA grounds, Amber Service Station opened early to feed the masses and Mike’s Tyres and Fenton Commercials Ltd provided support vehicles for the walk.
“There were a good few supporters out. Brew Boys were at the GAA grounds and served coffee to the volunteers and people waiting there. They have a good name for coffee, and they gave a percentage of their profits to the fundraiser too.
“There were several supporters along the way, people who weren’t participating in the walk but stood out to support it,” Mr Joyce told The Avondhu.
