‘Best Marketing’ award for Chroí Naofa TYs

- KATIE GLAVIN

Local students were amongst the winners at the Student Enterprise Programme Regional Final 2022.

Transition Year students from Coláiste an Chroí Naofa, Carraig na bhFear were awarded the ‘Best Marketing Award’ for their enterprise ‘Bombs Away’.

Speaking with The Avondhu, student enterprise elective teacher Bernadette Lucey said that students Roisin Geaney, Cathal Whooley, Sinead Murphy, Aoibheann Minihane-Sullivan and Katelyn Kenneally began working on the enterprise in September.

“Students elect to participate in the TY Enterprise Module and then groups are formed. In these groups, the students brainstormed their ideas.

“For Bombs Away, they moulded chocolate into a hollow sphere and filled them with powder and marshmallows which creates a really luxurious hot chocolate drink, and this was their prototype,” Ms Lucey said.

Ever the entrepreneurs, the Transition Year students took their business a step further, adding different flavourings to the hot chocolates following market research carried out within the school and on their social media account.

Advancing their offering even further, the product was also sold with a cup for the hot chocolate and came in different sizes, each priced appropriately.

“They also attended the Marina Market in Cork for the Christmas Trade Fair and they made huge sales there,” Ms Lucey added.

SURPRISE SURPRISE...

The South Cork Final took place via a virtual event online, with nine categories up for grabs, with the Coláiste an Chroí Naofa students taking the Best Marketing Award.

“They were quite surprised and taken aback that they had won such a significant award but they had put in a significant amount of work into their enterprise and had made good sales throughout the year,” Ms Lucey added.

Out of eight schools and 31 participating teams, Cork County Council’s Local Enterprise Office South Cork announced that teenage entrepreneurs from Coláiste Muire Crosshaven will represent South Cork at this year’s Student Enterprise Programme National Final.

The Student Enterprise Programme is coordinated by the Local Enterprise Offices and involves approximately 24,000 students from 500 secondary schools every year. The programme runs from September to May annually.
