Consultation deadline approaches for Ballyduff traffic calming works

- KATIE GLAVIN

Public consultation on a proposed traffic calming scheme and road improvement works for the R666 at Ballyduff Village will close on Tuesday, May 17.

Waterford City and County Council are proposing to undertake additional road improvement works along the R666 in the village.

Works will include the construction of a 1.5m to 1.8m wide footpath along the road, extending from the existing footpath at ‘ Cois Abhann’ housing development entrance on the western approach, linking in with existing footpaths in the village.

Cobble-lock footpath build-out is to be constructed along the length of the existing external eating area in the village and will also tie in with the existing footpath on Main Street. This footpath will extend past the former River Action Restaurant, past the old McCarthy’s storehouse, outside which, a 2.4-metre wide pedestrian crossing will be put in place.

Within the existing centre island, the belisha beacon controlled pedestrian crossing will be installed on the western approach ‘to provide safe movement and connection for pedestrians and cyclists’, the council said.

A 3.2-metre wide seating area will also be installed outside the old McCarthy’s Storehouse building, as provided for under a grant to Ballyduff Muintir na Tire Community Services.

PARKING & PUBLIC LIGHTING

Upgraded public lighting will be installed along the footpath where required and dedicated parking areas will be provided for the existing dwelling houses along the extent of the works. Outside the former River Action Restaurant, a parking lay-by area will be provided also.

Waterford City and County Council note that additional traffic calming measures will be implemented along the extent of the works, with the inclusion of ‘SLOW’ markings along with additional road edge markings through the village.

To encourage speed reduction when entering the village, a yield sign and island will be constructed on the western approach to Ballyduff.

“These traffic works along the previously constructed traffic calming works will provide a safe environment for all road users,” Waterford City and County Council stated.

Rumble strips will be laid along the R666 in advance of the approach to the speed limit signage to encourage speed reduction, and ‘drive slowly through Ballyduff’ signage is to be erected on both approaches to the village.

On the L-1007 approach, roadside kerbing with a protective bollard will be constructed around the corner of the existing building, extending from the end of the existing footpath to provide protection to pedestrians from turning and approaching vehicles.
