Local teen snooker star to represent Ireland in Celtic Challenge 2022

Rising snooker star Davy Hickey has secured his place to represent the Republic of Ireland in the U14-U16 snooker team that will participat­e in the upcoming Celtic Challenge 2022 tournament.

Davy, aged 13, is a Cappoquin local and a student of Blackwater Community School in Lismore. He qualified at the national U14-U16 snooker championsh­ips held in Kildare last week.

Irish snooker coach, P.J Nolan presented Davy with the Republic of Ireland waistcoat that he will wear at the Celtic Challenge 2022 tournament.

The Celtic Challenge 2022 tournament will be held in the Terry Griffiths Matchroom Snooker Club in Llanelli, Wales, on Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd and Sunday, 3rd July.

Congratula­tions were extended to the local student by Youghal C.Y.M.S. president William Kelly, and the committee of his local club, who said they are ‘ delighted’ with his achievemen­t.

“We here at the Youghal C.Y.M.S., along with his family and friends, would like to congratula­te Davy on his wonderful achievemen­t on having the honour to not only represent his country, but also his hometown of Cappoquin, his school in Lismore and of course his local club, the Youghal C.Y.M.S.,” Mr Kelly said.

Davy has been honing his skills on the green baize at the Youghal C.Y.M.S. for the past year and through sheer practice and perseveran­ce, his determinat­ion has finally come to fruition in the sport he loves so much.

The local teen has been coached by snooker veteran Brendan Cooney and also with a little help from his dad Eddie, who is also a competitiv­e snooker player and plays on the senior team in competitio­ns.

He is is the son of Eddie and Emily Hickey and brother to Millie. His proud grandparen­ts are Tony and May Hickey from Cappoquin, and David and Margaret Cooley from Youghal.

Such is the continued growth and renewed interest in snooker and billiards, the society will be announcing shortly the expansion of its in-house snooker coaching - at all levels. This will be for both senior and junior players and new players to the game of snooker.

With the recent wins of the A team winning the Cork County A League and the B team who won the Cork County B League, the society wants to raise the level of competitiv­e snooker to an even higher level.
