Colman’s Blitz returns

- BY FIFTH YEAR STUDENT SEAMUS BRANAGH

The Colman’s Blitz made its long-awaited return on Friday, 6th May as 14 primary schools and approximately 200 primary school students from the local area gathered for an actionpacked day of hurling.

The blitz is a long-standing tradition of St. Colman’s College; a proud hurling school and introduces some prospective students to the fun, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of the school. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances of the last two years, the blitz hasn’t been held since September 2019.

The day got underway with the group stage as Kilworth, Castlelyons, Rathcormac and Scoil na nÓg all qualified for the 11-a-side Cup semi-finals. The Shield semi-finals were then played out between Ballyduff Upper, Gaelscoil, Ballynoe and Watergrasshill. These semi-finals set up two blistering final match ups as Kilworth met Castlelyons to battle it out for the Blitz Cup, while Ballyduff Upper would face Ballynoe for the Blitz Shield.

These finals turned out to be great games with much skill, teamwork, and determination on display from all sides. However, regardless of effort this cruel sport does require a loser, Castlelyons and Ballyduff Upper fell short seeing Kilworth and Ballynoe take home the Blitz Cup and Blitz Shield, respectively.

The return of the Colman’s Blitz was a massively successful one that was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. Rian Noonan of Ballyduff Upper told of the blitz being “great craic” and teacher Mr. Murphy of Watergrasshill commented on a “well organised event” with “great referees”. Rathcormac star man, Micháel Walsh said he had “a load of fun”.
