County Track and Field Championships

-

The second day of the County Track and Field Championships for the U12 to U19 age groups was held at MTU Cork on Sunday, May 8th. The club had 11 athletes compete, and they all did fantastically!

Luke O’Connor and Henry Bagnall were the only two boys in the U12 age group, and they competed in shot putt and sprints. Henry finished 6th overall in the shot put, and Luke was unable to compete as he missed the event.

This happens to us all at some point and no doubt he’ll have more chances to compete in the future. They both competed in the 80m sprints and performed admirably, despite not qualifying for the semi-finals.

Erika Dorgan was the only U12 girl competing, and she again raced the 80m sprints but just missed qualifying.

She then went on to compete in the turbo javelin, which isn’t her favourite event, but she still gave it her all!

John Curtin, Alex Bagnall, and Émilie McElvaney all competed in three events in the U13 division. John competed in both the long and high jump events. He placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.05m.

John also competed in the 80m sprints and performed admirably. The two girls had a great day, starting with Emilie’s 3.55m long jump and Alex’s 3.51m long jump.

Following that, they both competed in the 80m sprints, where Émilie qualified for the semi-finals with a time of 12.85, while unfortunately Alex did not. Émilie saved her best event for last, finishing a very close 2nd place in the javelin, only missing out on gold by a mere centimetre with a throw of 21:36m.

Fionn Hayes was the club’s only participant in the U14 category, and he tried everything with great enthusiasm! His first event was discus, where he placed 6th with a throw of 18.44m. He subsequently did the shot and finished 6th with a distance of 6.80m.

Fionn won gold in the 2k race walking and came close to winning bronze in the high jump with a leap of 1.25m.

Daniel Dorgan and Rachel O’Flynn competed in the U15 division. Rachel was first on the track in the 800m race. With a brilliant time of 2.27.10, she came in 2nd place overall.

Daniel also medalled, coming 1st in the 2k race walking and finished 3rd in the shot putt event with a throw of 7.95m.

U18 Rachael Walsh and U19 Jamie Dineen toed the line for the 3000m race after a long wait. Rachael came in 2nd in the girls race with a great time of 11.45.84, and Jamie came in 3rd in the boys race with a time of 10.56.55.

Congratulations to all of our medallists and to all of our athletes who represented the club so well. The County Championships for U9, U10, and U11 athletes, as well as relay competitions for all age groups, are scheduled for next Sunday.
