May bank holiday threeball a family affair

-

Fermoy GC is very much a family club and the result of the May bank holiday competition was certainly proof if proof were needed as to the truth of the statement. It certainly was a family affair with the winning teams including father and son, father-in-law and husbands and wives.

Overall it was a pleasant day for golf although the morning players did get some showers while those who opted for the afternoon had lovely early summer sunshine. In first place with an excellent score of 53 points were Charley McCarthy, his son Niall and Patrick O’Brien (Bandon) who is Niall’s father-in-law. In second also with 53 points were Donal and Marge Ahern accompanied by Mick Dowling.

Third position went to Willie and Pauline Morrison and Deirdre Butler 52 points. It didn’t end there for the Morrison family as Pauline played the ladies weekly competition on Sunday, 1st May and was in the prizes. To top of a superb family weekend of golf Pauline and Willie’s son Ryan also had the lowest gross score in the men’s weekend competition so overall it was a wonderful weekend for three of our golfing families.

RESULTS 18 HOLE VOUCHER COMPETITION

Last week’s voucher competition was played on Sunday 1st and Wednesday, 4th May due to Monday 2nd May being a bank holiday. In first place was Brid Lonergan (30) who playing on Wednesday returned an great score of 42 points. In second position was Linda O’Donnell (41) 39 points, just one ahead of Pauline Morrison (18) 38 points. Well done to all the prize-winners.

The results of the Barnes Jewellers Open Day singles will be published next week.

Upcoming competition kindly sponsored by Doll’s House Boutique.

On Sunday/Monday 15th/16th May we will play the Doll’s House Boutique, Mitchelstown v/par competition. Lady Captain Siobhán on behalf of all the members thanks fellow member and sponsor Aileen Redmond for her very generous sponsorship. The Baker Cup will be played in conjunction with the competition, This cup is one of the ladies club longstanding traditions, it is always played versus par and with a special prize for the player in seventh position.

Unfortunately, the reason for the 7th prize has been lost over the years and we keep hoping someone out there might be able to give us the answer at some stage.

INTERCLUB MATCHES

Our Revive Active Team were drawn with Monkstown GC who had the advantage of a home draw, our ladies battled hard against the strong home side and alas we lost three matches with two called in. It was the first time in years Fermoy has entered this competition which was formerly known as the Miele Four Ball and while we were disappointed to lose, it was certainly a great experience for all those who played. Thanks to team managers Mary Wall, Helen O’Brien and Mary Lysaght, the ladies who played and those who came to support.

BEST OF LUCK TO OUR JUNIOR FOURSOMES TEAM

Our junior foursomes team play West Waterford on this coming Saturday, 14th May at 3pm at home in Fermoy. We wish the team and managers Claire O’Sullivan and Vice-Captain Nuala O’Sullivan the very best of luck.

THURSDAY LADIES

On Thursday, 5th May seventeen ladies arrived for the weekly scramble, it was a beautiful day for golf with bright sunshine and barely a puff of wind to be detected. In first place was the two ball of Liz Geany and Eileen O’Neill who returned a nett 30.5 point 3 ahead of Mary Crowley, Claire de Lacy and Pauline Hyland. In third position were Brid Quane, Mary Kennedy and Olive Murphy 32.6 and in fourth were Vice President Eileen O’Sullivan, Josephine Kappis and Paula O’Mahony 33.8 nett.

BEGINNERS GOLF ON MONDAY EVENINGS

Our get into golf programme began last Monday evening but if you missed the first night there is still plenty of time to give this wonderful sport a trial run. Golf is a sport enjoyed by people of all ages and at every level thanks to the handicap system and it also has the added benefit of a wonderful social side. You don’t need any equipment to give the sport a trial run as golf clubs and balls will be provided at the beginners session, all you need to bring is a pair of comfortable trainers. If you are interested in giving this great sport a try come along on next Monday evening. Give Martha a call on 086-0816416.

THURSDAY SENIORS

Some late arrivals added up to another excellent turnout of 44 players for last week’s seniors outing which was played in lovely conditions. Two of the main organisers Joe Slattery and John Caffrey teamed up with Ml Reidy and Billy Timlin to return an excellent nett score of 21.2 with a handicap of 9.8 for first place. Runners up .5 of a shot back were Ray Ennis, Pat Manley, Jim D’Arcy and Joe Tobin with Tom Barry, Dave Hoare, Dan Galvin and Nicky O’Sullivan completing the podium on 23.4 nett. It was certainly a good day for the organising table as three of the four officials of the day and our leader featured in the top three. It was also great to welcome back some members who had not been with us for a while.

OTHER CLUB NEWS

Our very popular Friday night mixed began last Friday with fifteen members arriving on a lovely bright evening, the rain from earlier in the day having cleared completely. We thank Ladies Club Committee member Eileen O’Neill and Men’s Club PRO Liam Butler for agreeing to coordinate the draw. The Friday night mixed is an integral part of our club’s social fabric dating back to when the old course was in the “Aerodrome” and very possibly beyond. It is a wonderful tradition, one which we should treasure and uphold. The social evenings are where you meet and get to know fellow members therefore, we encourage all our newer members to come along and give it a go.

The “mixed” is where many of us won our first prize playing golf so you may not go home empty handed either. The craic and laughter can be mighty, many a visitor to the club on a Friday evening has commented on the wonderful atmosphere that surrounds this event. Results for social mixed Friday, 6th May are as follows: 1st Billy Timlin, Mary O’Brien and Claire O’Sullivan, 2nd Christy Condon, Bridget Joyce and Denis Crowley.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR JUVENILES ON THEIR GREAT WIN

President John, Lady Captain Siobhán and Captain Gerry on behalf of all the members send their congratulations to our juveniles who had a great win against Mallow on Sunday last in the National Junior Foursomes. They will now meet Cork GC in the quarter final.

Well done to Cian O’Callaghan, Louie Roche, Darragh Nolan and Cian McGirr and reserve Juvenile Captain Ben Carey. Thanks also to juvenile officers Michael Wren and his fellow juvenile officers for their time and commitment to the club.
