Decisive victory for intermediate hurlers

-

Our intermediates travelled to Copper Alley to take on Youghal last Sunday morning, 8th May. On a beautiful morning for hurling our lads ground out a well-deserved victory to win our second league game on the trot.

Alan Fenton opened the scoring with a free after 2 minutes when Anthony Spillane was fouled on the 45. This was the first of 0-14 for Alan in a Man of the Match performance that made him stand out on the day. The first half was fairly nip and tuck with Castlelyons always keeping their noses in front through a fine Anthony Spillane score after 12 minutes, Alan Fenton tagging on the frees and a Barry Murphy point after 28 minutes. Alan tapped over another free after James Kearney was fouled just before the break to leave it 0-8 to 0-5 in favour of Castlelyons at half-time.

Castlelyons had the favour of the light breeze in the second half and made full use of the advantage. Alan scored a wonderful long range score but Youghal replied with 2 well worked scores themselves. A period of indiscipline on Youghal’s part crept into the game with Castlelyons applying a lot of pressure in the middle third of the field. Eoin Maye hurling well and contributing to 4 pointed frees by Alan Fenton in the period. Youghal again responded with a couple points but Castlelyons responded strongly and finished the game with a flourish as our lads began to express themselves. Brian O’Donovan, Colm Barry, James Kearney and Anthony Spillane all got onto the score sheet before the final whistle went to give Castlelyons the victory on a scoreline of 0-20 to Youghal’s 0-12

Scorers; A Fenton 0-14 (11f,165), A Spillane 0-2, C Barry 0-1, B O’Donovan 0-1, J Kearney 0-1, B Murphy 0-1.

Our U9 footballers were at home to Grenagh last Saturday week. There were some lovely team goals scored and brilliant long range points. The boys played very well as a team, passing the ball around nicely. Thanks to Grenagh for travelling and congratulations to all the boys who made their Communion last Saturday as well.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT

The tuck shop will be open from Monday, 9th May to Thursday, 12th May from 6.30pm to 8.30pm to return the envelopes/ donations for the following below. A new pitch and a safer method of entering and leaving the GAA grounds, are Phase 1. The number of Castlelyons players of GAA, Camogie and LGFA have grown substantially in recent years and current facilities are no longer adequate.

Together let’s build something to be proud of as a club and secure the future for the upcoming juvenile players. To schedule this work in July - it can’t succeed without money. Details of the project and a funding proposal are seen on the club website. Any donation is confidential.

Members of the development steering committee will be calling to houses in the locality to collect the brochures that have been dropped off over the past couple of weeks. Any contribution at all will be appreciated and will go a long way to allow us to start turning the sod on our brand new pitch this summer.
