Limerick Lifelong Learning 2022 starts Monday

- MARIAN ROCHE

Limerick’s Lifelong Learning Festival takes place this coming Monday, May 23rd until the following Sunday and advertises a host of online and in-person events to promote a creative approach to learning. While many of the in-person events are based in Limerick City, many are online and so can be availed of by those in rural Limerick, as well as countrywide.

For chocolate lovers, a Zoom event on Monday morning promises to enlighten sweet-lovers everywhere as members of Limerick Fairtrade City Group visited a Fairtrade cocoa farm in Ghana, and will share their experience with the audience via PowerPoint.

Also on Monday, GOSHH will host an online event to teach about HIV, Hepatitis C and syphilis, with a focus on getting tested for these non-symptomatic infections, and to help remove the stigma associated with getting checked. While all are welcome, this may be of particular interest to those working in the social care sector, students, as well as those working with minority groups or the vulnerable.

On Tuesday evening, the University of Limerick are offering taster sessions in Arabic, Chinese and Japanese online, and on Wednesday the College of FET in Kilmallock are holding Open Day taster sessions with the chance to try furniture restoration or a social media skills session, amongst many others. Also on Wednesday, UL are offering an online event on the basics of making a will, suitable for law students or the general public. On the same day the college will be doing an online session for mature students on the pathways to returning to college as an older student.

‘In a world of robots, artificial intelligence and decision-making algorithms, what value can people bring to the future of work?’ is the title of one of Thursday’s online sessions, and for all sentient beings, workshops on writing and on public speaking will also take place.

Events will continue throughout Friday and the weekend, with Saturday featuring the official launch of a community-based exhibition of mosaic art in Newcastle West.
