YEAR END CLASS TRIPS AT COLÁISTE FIONNCHUA

-

Our year groups are currently enjoying their end of year school trips. Following the 3rd year class trip to ZipIt Forest Adventure Park, 1st year students headed to Fota Wildlife Park for a day among the animals! From gibbons, to lions, to kangaroos, the students had a great day wandering through the park.

The Asian Sanctuary, tropical house, and giraffe run were also on the must-see for the students on the day. 2nd year students were also out on a class trip, when they visited Spike Island. Following the ferry ride across, students learned about the 1,300 year history of the island, where they were inform of Spike Islands military, penal, social and monastic past.

Following this, students were left to wander around the island where they saw the Punishment Block, the Artillery Gun Park, and the War of Independence museum, to name but a few. Following Spike Island, it was off to Mahon Point for some lunch and some retail therapy.

TY ACTIVITIES

TY’s had a skills building workshop with the ‘Irish School of Excellence’ and completed modules in road safety. This involved preparation for the driving theory test, how to change wheels and do basic mechanics, and even experienced driving a car. Students also tried ‘ beer goggles’ which allowed them to experience what it would be like to drive a car while under the influence. Thank you to the ‘Irish School of Excellence’ for such an excellent workshop.

TY students also recently visited Moorepark, as they are currently taking part in a kefir experiment with Teagasc. Students have been fermenting their own kefir in water with sugar/ apricots since January.

In addition to the experiment, students were treated to a lab show on the latest research projects on probiotics, milk, DNA profiling, fermenting waste products, and making biodegradable plastic from milk waste products. The students were also given a tour of the working labs which included the flavour lab and DNA profiling lab. Congratulations to Adrija Baltrunaite who came second in a quiz held at the end of the day. A huge thank you to Teagasc for such an informative day.

STUDENTS V TEACHERS SOCCER MATCH

The sun shone last Friday as the 6th year students once again squared off against their teachers in the annual Students vs Teachers soccer match. The students sent out a very strong team this year and they had victory in their sights early on when a goal by Justin Cheng gave them the early lead. However, the teachers soon settled and a goal by Mr Walsh brought the teams level going in at half time.

The teachers showed their experience in the second half when a brace of goals by Mr Walsh gave the teachers the clear advantage. The students, however, were not going down without a fight. Goalkeeper Mr O’Sullivan was in fine form throughout the match before he was finally bested by his rival goalkeeper Jack O’Keeffe who scored late in the game for a students. Congratulations to all those who took part in this very sporting game.
