Busy day out for all on Sunday last

-

The County Track and Field for the U9, U10 and U11 took place on Sunday, 15th May in MTU. It was a pretty busy day as all relay races for U9 to U19 were on in the afternoon after the U9-U11 events. At least the weather was nice!

In the morning ready for action at 9am were U9 Petr Kiraly and Kealan Cotter, U10 Megan Walsh, Fionn Purcell and Thomas McElvaney and U11 Cliona Hurley, Amy Murphy and Christine McElvaney. The excitement was great as it was a big event for our new members! They did really well and should be proud of their achievements. Petr Kiraly was 2nd in the 60m heat and qualified for the semi-final.

He was just unlucky then but finished strong in 4th position. Kealan Cotter ran a very good heat also but didn’t qualify. They both did the turbo javelin and Kealan’s throw was 8.63m. They went on to run the 300m and unfortunately Petr fell despite being in 4th position when the incident happened. Kealan competed in the long jump and did very well (2.23m). Well done boys!

The U10 boys had great fun, mostly while waiting for their turn to jump at the long jump. They played Xs and Os with sand on the ground with children beside them! Thomas’s jump was 2.78m and Fionn’s 1.95m. They both did the turbo and Thomas threw the turbo at a distance of 10.67m. They also participated in the 60m sprints and Thomas in the 500m. Well done boys.

Megan Walsh also participated in the 60m, turbo and long jump and enjoyed her day there despite being the only U10 girl from the club.

In the U11 Cliona Hurley was 5th overall in the 60m sprints in 9.44. Christine and Amy didn’t qualify but ran very strong races. Cliona came 2nd at the long jump, jumping 3.76m and Christine was 6th with a jump of 3.22 m and Amy’s jump was 2.99m. Christine was 4th at the turbo javelin throwing 12.54m. Amy was 13th with 9,22m and Cliona 17th with 9.02m Cliona went on to win silver at the 600m. Christine came in 3rd position followed by Amy in 6th place. Well done girls!

In the afternoon it was the turn of the relays! And our teams well ready by 1.30pm but with the number of entries, the event ran slower than expected. Our U11 girls (Amy, Christine, Megan and Cliona) were 7th in their heat and unfortunately didn’t qualify for the final.

The U12 relay with Hannah O’Driscoll, Louise Finn, Charlotte Purcell and Ericka Dorgan were next. They ran a great race and just missed out on qualification. Our last relay was the U14 boys with Michael Leamy, Finn O’Driscoll, Fionn Hayes and Micheál Walsh. They qualified for the final and came 5th overall.

A very big congratulations to all our members who were so patient on Sunday. The next event on the calendar is on Sunday, 22nd May for the County B competition and combined events.
