Hard fought draw in senior football league

Fermoy 1-10 Kiskeam 0-13

Duhallow side Kiskeam travelled up to us in Fermoy to contest this league match which was the first encounter between both sides since they defeated us in the Premier Intermediate football final in 2017. This was a tough uncompromising game with no quarter given or taken. It was filled with plenty of good football and a certain amount of what one would call “on the edge” tackling which kept referee Pa O’Driscoll on high alert. A draw was a very fair result as both teams had chances to win but failed to convert them.

Kiskeam started the scoring after only one minute with a fine point from play. A flowing movement from Fermoy ended with Darragh Daly scoring our first point of the game on 3 mins. Kiskeam regained their lead with a free on 4 minutes and it was another ten minutes before the next score which came from us. Ben Twomey converted a very difficult ‘ 45 but again Kiskeam regained the lead on 16 minutes with a point from play.

A Ruairi O’Hagan close-in free on 18 minutes levelled up the score before a Ruairi point from play made the score 0-04 to 0-03 in our favour on 20 mins. Almost straight from the kick-out Kiskeam tore up the field and scored the equalising point. Ben restored our one point lead with a free on 24 mins but again Kiskeam gained parity on 26 mins with a point from play.

The game was turned on its head with a fine individual goal by Ben. He received the ball on the Kiskeam ‘ 45 and proceeded to go on a mazy run leaving his marker in his wake. He bore down on goal and had supporting players to his right and left but such is this young man’s confidence that he ignored them, kept going and blasted the ball in to the Kiskeam net. Great goal! This gave us a small bit of breathing space but Kiskeam are a dogged side and pulled a point back on 28 mins. We had the final say of the half when Ruairi converted a free on 30 mins to leave us three points to the good at the short whistle. Half-time: Fermoy 1-06 Kiskeam 0-06.

The second half started well for us when we scored the first point on 31 mins through Martin Brennan. We ended up doing a fair amount of defending and counter attacking for the next 20 mins without scoring. Kiskeam started their comeback when they scored from a free on 35 mins, followed by a point from play on 36 mins and another from play on 46 mins to leave one point between the teams.

The match got very fractious and bitty leading to several off the ball incidents and a lot of fouling. A second ‘45 from Ben in the 50th min got us back on the scoresheet to put us two points ahead. Kiskeam scored from play on 52 mins and a great point from Martin made it a two point game again on 54 mins. Kiskeam scored a point from play on 56 mins but we made it two again with a Ben free on 57 mins.

We were hoping that we could hold out for the final couple of minutes but Kiskeam upped the gears and attacked us incessantly. They were rewarded for their hard toil by the end. They scored from play on 59 mins to bring the score back to one point and then they levelled the game on 60 mins. The referee played a few mins extra but neither side succumbed and he blew the final whistle to leave the match ending in a draw.

From the Fermoy viewpoint this was a very satisfactory outing as we were missing some of our experienced players and the guys who stepped in played extremely well. If we keep this form up we should be in good fettle for the championship so we look forward to that. Fermoy Abu!
