DIVISION 2A FOOTBALL LEAGUE Glanworth 2-16 Ballydesmond 1-7

In glorious conditions last Saturday afternoon we defeated Ballydesmond to continue the fine form our footballers are showing. It was a very impressive performance across the board as for large parts of the game we were in complete control. You can see the confidence is building nicely and the young lads in their first year with the team are gelling in really well which is great to see.

We got the first score of the day after two minutes from the mighty boot of Davy Pyne. The next few minutes there were chances from both ends but a lot of their shots were dropping short due in part to the hard work of our defence whose incessant pressure was telling to excellent effect. In fact it took 24 mins for them to score which is a credit to our lads. On the 9th minute Darragh O’Brien kicked a great point and we were three to the good on 12 mins with Stevie Condon slotted coolly over the bar.

Ger O’Neill suffered a dead leg and had to be replaced but to credit our lads it didn’t unsettle us and we continued to control the game. Darragh O’Brien kicked two truly excellent points to put us five points to the good after twenty minutes. They got on the scoreboard as I said on the 24th minute but we replied with a lovely taken point by Ross Murphy to leave it at half-time 0-6 to 0-1. We had a lot of the ball in the first half but I felt we could have been more ahead at half-time.

In the first twenty minutes of the second half we would make amends. They actually got the first score of the second half but we replied with 3 points in two minutes from a free from Davy Pyne and some well taken scores by Sean Finn and John O’Sullivan. They kicked a point before one of the crucial scores of the half when we struck for a goal. Jamie Fogarty won a ball back he had no right to and passed it in to John O’Sullivan who wonderfully skipped around the keeper and slotted it home.

We were well on top at this stage and crucially continued to make it show on the scoreboard as well. Davy Pyne and Sean Finn kicked a point apiece before Jamie Fogarty rounded his man in a flash and charged towards goal. There was only one thing on his mind and his powerful shot struck the back of the net.

They replied with a point but Darragh O’Brien responded with another well taken point. They got another point but we responded well with three points in a row to put us sixteen points to the good at this stage with six minutes to go. Ballydesmond to their credit kept going and would score 1-2 in the next few minutes but rather fittingly we would have the last say with another excellent point by Sean Finn.

The lads will be delighted with the win as it continues the promotion push keeping us joint second with three games to play. The two teams level with us in second place we still have to play so there are some tough games ahead. But with the lads playing well I’m sure there will be no fear of what is coming up. Keep up the great work lads.

DIVISION 1 HURLING LEAGUE Harbour Rovers 0-16 Ballyhooly 0-24

Our junior hurlers suffered their first defeat of the league on Wednesday of last week at home against Ballyhooly. In the first half we looked in control keeping them scoreless from play but the second half showing was simply not enough to win a game. The second half was a mixture of Ballyhooly stepping up their game, underperformance from us and some truly baffling refereeing decisions. It just left a sour taste but the lads don’t have long to make amends as they play twice in the space of a few days against Charleville and Clyda Rovers on Wednesday and Sunday of this week.

We started the first half very well with 3 points in the first four minutes, with two from Peter and one from Stevie Condon. They got their first point before Davy Pyne replied with a fine point from play. They then hit two in a row before we replied with three of our own through Stevie Condon to put four in it. They got another point before John O’Sullivan and Ed Roche got on the scoresheet with well taken points. For the rest of the half we shared two points apiece with ours coming from Stevie Condon. The half-time score was 0-11 to 0-6.

They had the wind in the second half but I felt if we could keep the control we had in the first half it could go a long way. Instead Ballyhooly came out attacking and we simply could not get going. They had six points in the first nine minutes to our free from Stevie and the sides were level.

They took the lead but we replied with two points from Stevie to go ahead once again. They scored again but we responded with another point from Stevie. With 12 to go we were reduced to 14 men for what seemed for nothing and this completely changed the game. At the time Ballyhooly had the momentum but we were still fighting hard. We lost our shape and we would only score one more point from Stevie but they scored 10 points in this period.

There is plenty to work on for our lads but I know they can bounce back from this. The squad is full of many fine hurlers and I’m sure give time they will flourish.

Team: David O’Sullivan, Phillip Blackburn, Brian Gallagher, Jamie Fogarty, Jerome Fitzgibbon, Thomas Condon, Marc Moloney, Jesse Walsh, David Pyne, Darragh O’Brien, Emmett Sheehan, Peter Condon, Ed Roche, John O’Sullivan and Stephen Condon. Subs: Jack Coughlan, Michael Blackburn, John Blackburn and Ian Dwyer.
