Wonderful wins for Fermoy ladies and gents

-

It has been a wonderful couple of weeks for both Fermoy ladies and gents’ clubs with the ladies junior foursomes team winning at home on Saturday last and the men’s JB Carr team progressing to the third round of their competition. The Purcell team also had a great win on Sunday last playing in Mallow Golf Club. President John on behalf of all the members sends congratulations to all those who participated on teams and their managers and wishes them continued success going forward.

Following a bye in the first round our junior foursomes team were playing West Waterford at home in Fermoy on Saturday last. Fortunately, the day was as forecast and the players had ideal golfing conditions. The first pairing in for Fermoy were Áine O’Grady and Emma Comyn who had a great win on the fourteenth and they were quickly followed by Martha Brennan and Claire Coughlan who had teed off first and following a tightly fought match victory was theirs on the eighteenth.

Eucharia Crowley and Eileen O’Neill were in a match that was nip and tuck all day and were looking good to go level on the eighteenth when they were called in. We would like to thank the ladies from West Waterford for matches that were played in a very sporting and enjoyable manner. Well done to all the team on a brilliant performance and we wish them and their managers vice-captain Nuala O’Sullivan and Claire O’Sullivan the best of luck in the next round. Thanks also to all those who came to support our team, your presence is very much appreciated.

ANNETTE TWOMEY WINS BARNES JEWELLERS OPEN DAY TWO YEARS IN A ROW

On Sunday/Monday, 8th/9th May our competition was kindly sponsored by Barnes Jewellers Fermoy and we thank Annette Twomey and Noel Barnes for their valued and generous sponsorship. Unfortunately, the weather on Monday was not favourable nevertheless quite a few ladies braved the elements and took to the fairways and despite the dreadful conditions three of them were in the prizes.

Given Met Eireann’s forecast many had opted to play on our alternate day Sunday with entries almost trebling in number. The overall winner was the sponsor herself Annette Twomey (28) who returned an excellent 40 points while playing on Monday in the extremely tough and wet conditions. This was the second year in a row that Annette, one of our Get Into Golf Co-Ordinators, has come in first place in her own prize.

When asked what her secret to success was, Annette said light-heartedly, “it must be that I am not under any pressure playing in my own prize.” In second place was Pauline Morrison (17) who continued her winning form by returning a fine 39 points playing on a dry albeit extremely windy Sunday. In third position also playing on Sunday was Sheila Le Gear (25) 38 points who pipped ladies PRO Audrey Cremen (25) on countback who played on Monday. The best visitor prize was won by Anne Marie Ahern (17) who was lady captain in Castlemartyr in 2021 and who’s Mum Ann (formerly Noonan) hails from Fermoy but moved to Midleton when she married, Anne Marie’s Aunt Joan Noonan resides in Fermoy. Playing with lady captain Siobhan on the wet and miserable Monday she returned an excellent 35 points. Well done to all the prize-winners.

MEN’S CLUB REPORT

Our JB Carr team had a great win in a hard fought and sporting second round match against our near neighbours Mitchelstown on Monday week last. Playing at home we knew we were in for a tough match as we were giving between two and 5 shots to our opposition who are always competitive and so it turned out. We were looking good at the turn but as always the matches tightened and it was all tied up at 2 all with John Murphy and Ml Walsh down the 19th.

Following two excellent shots we had 6 feet left and when our opponents failed to get up and down from short of the green Michael was left to calmly putt down to 6 inches for the win. The captain, Gerry, was fulsome in his praise for the players and management for a great win and for our opponents on their sporting performance. We now move on to meet Mallow in the next round again at home.
