Liam O’Brien wins again

-

Young Fermoy cyclist Liam O’Brien continued his great season on the road on Sunday last, when he came home for a great win in the Sliabh Luachra Classic in Knocknagree. This race catered for all the senior grades, as well as the juniors, with the senior 3 and junior riders given a handicap on the senior 1 and 2 cyclists.

The race, over 100kms, was a testing course and when the senior 1 and 2 cyclists were closing on the leaders Liam attacked the leading group and rode away on his own. However he was caught by the chasers with about a kilometre to go and after a short respite, he attacked again and came home a clear winner. He is likely to travel to Navan, Co Meath on this Sunday for the next round of the national road series, where he will be hoping to do well again.

His younger brother Shane won the prize for 1st U13 and another young Fermoy cyclist, Dean Sheridan, won the prize for 1st U11. A group of the young cyclists will be travelling to Killarney at the weekend for a round of the national mountain bike series and they are wished all the best on their first outing at this level.

Also on this week will be the second round of the Munster Youth League at Newcastle West, where they will be racing for all the youth cyclists on Tuesday.
