Great effort appreciated by all

-

Great progress is being made by the Lismore Tidy Towns work team and the CE team in its preparation for Lismore town’s participation in the 2022 SuperValu Tidy Towns competition. Adjudication starts nationally from the 11th June and continues until 5th August. So there is still a few weeks for some business premises to get their frontages washed. Thanks to those owners who have cleaned and painted in recent weeks.

With last week’s fine weather the following work has been done: weeding at the Monument, weeding the three beds under the palm trees, weeding at the long bed at the hotel, additional pollinator friendly planting at the narrow bed at New Street/ ex Bank of Ireland corner, at the raised beds adjacent to the pump New Street and new lavender planted in the herb bed in front of St. Carthage’s Cathedral.

Deepest sympathy is sent to active tidy towns worker Anne Brennan The Mills Lismore, her daughter Jacinta, son Kieran and other family members on the loss of Anne’s husband Frank. May he rest in peace.

ECO TIP OF THE WEEK

With food prices increasing, some shortages of some food products and vegetables perhaps it is now more important than ever to consider any food waste in your household. Plan now and save later.

According to “Stop Food Waste’’ initiative’s 2021 National Food Waste Attitudes survey results one of the key generators of food waste was a lack of planning. Investing a little time in

food planning will save you money-by keeping you focussed on buying what you really need and plan to eat:

Save you time-by not shopping for items you don’t need or even saving you a visit to the shops altogether: Makes you feel more organised: Know what you need:

1. Keep a tally of food as it runs outrecord it somewhere in the kitchen ie. notice board or on your phone:

2. Do a stocktake of what you have already—this will reveal what

you don’t need to buy and what perishable foods that you need to use before they go off.

3. Record what you need and plan your shop- if you have been doing steps 1 and 2 you will know exactly what is needed . Don’t forget to include any food that goes to waste day to day too. If one item is going to waste more often it might be time to buy less of it or put it in the freezer for future use.
