Regatta set to return to Fermoy

-

After a gap of three years, Fermoy Regatta is to return, all be it in a reduced format on July 3.

Following several weeks of safety and logistical planning, a special meeting of the regatta committee, held on Monday night last, finally gave the unanimous go-ahead for a two-lane regatta to take place, instead of the normal three-lane event.

Although the pandemic played a big part in the recent cancellations, Fermoy Rowing Club members have stated that the main reason has been the deteriorating state of the weir and reduced water levels of over one and a half metres.

While plans for a total rebuild of the weir are about to be lodged to An Bord Pleanala, an optimistic date for completion would be the summer of 2025, rowing club members noted. Therefore, the regatta committee had to decide whether running a reduced event would be feasible, safe and financially viable.

Club president, Danny Higgins stated that feedback thus far has been positive.

“The feedback from the clubs of Ireland, local people and local businesses alike has been so positive, that we had seriously to look at running a regatta. Thankfully the promise of financial backing for the event from local insurance broker Charlie McCarthy of McCarthy Insurance Group was the driving force, in giving us the confidence to undertake the regatta's revival, and since then everyone we approach is promising us their full support,” Mr Higgins said.

A research team led by Eolann Sheehan, safety officer and engineer and Les Mahon, club secretary soon found a lot of willing professionals and companies that wanted to make the plan a reality. The course builders, Kenneth Barry and Tony O’Brien, will be assisted by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Defence Forces, Fermoy Wheelieboat, Blackwater Sub Aqua Club and Fermoy Red Cross in ensuring that the regatta makes the starting line in perfect order.

Regatta secretary, Paul Kavanagh stated “Now is when all the hard logistical work starts, but we are hugely enthusiastic after all the promises of help, both physically and financially. The regatta costs a serious amount of money to stage but we think we can make it viable. We now need more businesses and individuals to lend their financial backing, by sponsoring the regatta”.

Thirty-two different categories are planned, with up to 200 races on the day. The 32 category winners will be presented with a cup and individual medals and there will also be a trophy for the overall best club.

Club chairman, Pat O’Mahony stated that the Fermoy Regatta is placing a strong focus on supporting local this year.

“It’s all about supporting local and putting on a great spectacle for the town and also the visitors. We will have local caterers, local produce and a great day for all the family,” he said.

John Murphy, club trustee, confirmed that Fermoy Concert Band will also continue the tradition of performing, as they have at every Fermoy Regatta.

So another great day to look forward to, as Fermoy Regatta returns on Sunday, July 3.
