Reflecting with Sr Una in Fermoy

- JOHN AHERN

The world can seem and frequently is a dangerous and unpredictable place. Against a background of pestilence, pandemics and the war in Ukraine, members of the public were invited to join Little Company of Mary nun, Sr. Una Boland, for a ‘Day of Reflection’. This event took place in Fermoy last Saturday - the location, the church in the grounds of St. Patrick’s Community Hospital.

Sr. Una doesn’t claim to have all the answers, however, her ‘Day of Reflection’ invited people to take stock of their lives and assess what really matters.

The retreat attracted a mainly female audience, all of whom were impressed by Sr. Una’s openess, sincerity and compassion. There was a strong ‘it’s good to talk’ vibe, with attendees invited to view their own opinions and world views. Sr. Una’s special guest, Ukrainian priest, Fr. Biletskyy also made a big impression, thanks to his personal account of Russia’s brutal aggression towards his homeland.

The ‘Day of Reflection’ wasn’t all business as there was time for refreshments and informal discussion. A qualified psychotherapist and counsellor, Sr. Una’s professional skills have guided countless people through very challenging times. While ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ isn’t a diagnostic term, it does go some way to explaining Sr. Una’s approach.

LEFT WANTING MORE

Like any good occasion, it’s always encouraging when patrons are left wanting more and those who gave up their time last Saturday were firm in view that they want more of what Sr. Una and Fr. Biletskyy are offering.
