The dynamic duo Senan O’Reilly and Aidan Maher achieved great success at the Munster Schools Track and Field Event which took place in Templemore on Saturday, 21st May.

Senan O’Reilly won the Intermediate Boys 800 metre race. Furthermore, Senan ran a European standard time of 1:56.35, meaning that he qualifies to take part in an Olympic Festival in Slovakia on July 24th this summer.

Senan was thrilled with the win. “I was quietly confident going into the race as I had been training well with my coach Ken Nason. I was delighted with the result and proud to represent my school. I would like to thank my coach, Ms. Gumbleton and Ms. Sweeney.”

Aidan Maher took home silverware in “the Mile” with an impressive time of 4:49. Maher conceded that things didn’t go as planned on the day.

“My event is the steeplechase and it didn’t go as planned on the day. I came fourth, as there was tough competition. I was disappointed with that result; however, I then competed in the Mile and was delighted to come second. I’m thrilled to represent my school and my club, Carraig na bhFear AC. I would especially like to thank Willie Walsh, Rhona Lynch and Ger Foley.”

Both students are extremely dedicated and train five times a week. They look forward to representing Munster in the All-Ireland Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday, 4th June. They will also be competing in the Tailteann Inter-Provincial Games on 24th June later this summer.

Ms. Gumbleton, who is very proud of these athletes, stated: “These boys richly deserved their respective wins! Their futures are very bright.”
