Big push needed to get new pitch started

-

Full planning permission has been granted for our new development recently. We are hoping to get the new development started this July but first we need money to start to flow in from our Contribution Scheme. We are aiming to raise over €400,000 to get Phase 1 of the development complete. This will back up the €150,000 Sports Capital grant we were awarded earlier this year. It is vital that all contributions be given to the development committee by 31st May.

We are hoping to obtain a low interest development loan to help with paying for all the up-front expenses associated with such a large development. The steering committee have a meeting coming up soon and will need as much money in the bank as possible to obtain a great deal. We hope to start on the new pitch this July so we can have it up and running by the 2023 playing season.

INTERMEDIATES CONTINUE GOOD RUN

Our Intermediate hurlers welcomed Milford last Friday, 20th May to Castlelyons. Our opponents are plying their trade in the new ‘Super Junior’ grade, two grades below us, and the difference in class between the two teams was apparent from the outset. Milford started well keeping in touch with a couple of good scores from the middle of the field as Anthony Spillane started lively and had two points on the board within 5 mins of the start. The game began to quickly go Castlelyons’ way, however.

Peter Roche finished a great team goal after the Castlelyons attackers managed to turn over the

Milford defence and punished the visitors accordingly with a green flag. Points by Barry Murphy and Anthony Spillane were quickly followed by an excellent David Morrison goal.

A short puckout by Jack Barry was well worked up the pitch and when it landed to Davy he had only one thing on his mind. Milford tried hard and were able to tack on a couple of frees to reduce the deficit. Colm Spillane won a long ball and passed it outside to his brother Anthony 40 yards out. Anto looked like he was winding to pop it over the bar but he ended up giving a lobbed pass over the Milford defence to find and unmarked David Morrison who buried the ball into the back of the net.

Points from Alan Fenton, James Kearney and Ronan Fenton helped close out the half with Castlelyons leading 3-10 to 0-7. The second half continued the Castlelyons dominance. An array of scores from all angles with Colm McCarthy and Colm Spillane also getting on the score sheet. The Castlelyons defence always looked under control and it was great to see Leon Doocey back playing after an extended period on the side-line with a foot injury. In fairness to Milford they kept hurling and scored a goal with ten minutes remaining. The highlight of the game was a great individual goal by Alan Fenton who won the ball 45 yards out and soloed the ball in towards the Milford goal, took a couple of hefty shoulders and decided to drill the ball into the roof of the net to close out the game in Castlelyons’ favour. The game ended on a score line of 4-22 to 1-14 and saw us clock up our third league win in a row.

Team: J Barry, J O’Leary, L Sexton, C O’Neill, D Spillane, C Barry, L Doocey, J Kearney (0-2), A Fenton (1-7,0-4f), R Fenton (0-1), A Spillane (0-8), P Roche (1-0), B Murphy (0-2), C Spillane (0-1), D Morrison (2-0). Subs: E Maye for L Doocey, C McCarthy for R Fenton, D Morrison for J Kearney, J Waters for P Roche, S Casey for J O’Leary, G O’Keeney for Barry Murphy.

JUNIORS DRAW EVENTFUL CHALLENGE GAME

We welcomed Tallow to Castlelyons last Monday, 23rd May for a challenge game for our Junior hurlers. After waiting for the referee for nearly 30 mins we threw in the sliothar ourselves as the light was fading quickly. The first half had some good lively hurling. Tallow tried to isolate our full back Colm O’Neill throughout and played plenty of direct balls to the full forward which bore fruit at times. Alan O’Regan, Darran Tobin and Colm McCarthy were all to the fore as they popped over points after good team movements. The industrious Brian O’Donovan scored a great point from 50 yards out just before half time to leave matters balancing delicately at 0-13 to 0-11 in favour of Tallow at half-time. The 2nd half of this game could only be described as manic.

Tallow started well. Another quick ball into their full forward ended up with a deflected shot that beat Gavin O’Neill. Castlelyons responded straight away with Shane Flynn winning the ball 10 yards out, beating his man and burying the ball into the Tallow net. Castlelyons were to finish the

game with 14 men after substitute Liam Moroney landed a Tallow man with a right hook. A small kerfuffle ensued with players on the Tallow and Castlelyons teams picking up yellow cards. Liam got his marching orders and we were left facing an uphill battle.

Credit to our lads we were left a man down but they kept fighting hard. Tallow were awarded a goal by the ref after he decided the ball had crossed the line much to the disbelief of all those present. Colm McCarthy scored a 21 yard free after noticing the Tallow defence had not set up on the line properly and he drilled one home. Another goal by Griffin O’Keeney, 3 minutes later actually put Castlelyons into the lead 3-18 to 2-18. The extra man told near the end where Tallow were able to find free men easier and they got an overlap to score a third goal 6 minutes from the end. Points from Brian O’Donovan and Jack Waters placed us back into

the lead but Tallow found enough to score two late points to snatch a draw for themselves.

Team: D Kenny, D Morrison, C O’Neill, E Barry, J Healy, Conor McCarthy, S Moroney, J Waters (0-1), B O’Donovan (0-6), Colm McCarthy (1-6, 1-4f), D Tobin (0-2), G O’Keeney (1-1), A O’Regan (0-2), J Kenny, S Flynn (1-1).
