County Cork Track and Field Championships

-

Our club attended the 2022 County Cork Track and Field Championships, which were held in MTU, formerly CIT sportsgrounds, over the last 4 weekends.

Our reigning All-Ireland champion got off to a flyer for the club, by dominating the 600m boys U12 race, crossing the line in 1st place.

In the 600m boys U13 race, Conor Ronayne was unlucky, finishing 4th Senan O’Reilly ran well in the 1500 metres, which must have helped, as he came 1st in the 800 metres in the South Munster Schools championships. Later in the month Amy O’Connell and Meabh O’Connell competed in the U14 girls long jump and Maebh in the shot put and featured strongly, as did Charlotte Norman in the U15 girls 1,500 race.

But the day belonged to Sarah O’Connell in the girls U17 category. She finished 1st in discuss, high jump and 2nd in shot putt. It pays to keep training and staying involved in the sport.

SECOND DAY

In the 800m girls U14 were Ciara Hayes and Teegan Murphy. Charlie Nicholson finished a mighty second place in the U16 800m boys race. In the 800m U17 boys race, Cian Dunning finished 4th, after losing by one hundredth of a second!

Sarah O’Connell stayed busy, trying the 200m sprints as well as the long jump and javelin. An all-rounder for sure. Charlotte Norman also tried the javelin and long jump for good measure. Our U14 girls Anna Byrne, Maebh O’Connell and Amy O’Connell also tried their hand at the javelin and 200m sprints.

Our 3rd day was for our U10s and U11s boys and girls. Molly Casey, Sophie O’Connor and Ciara O’Connell all tried multiple sports, including the 500m, 60m, long jump and turbo javelin. Ciara did really well, finishing 3rd in the 500m.

In the boys U10 60m, Eoin Ronayne finished a brilliant 2nd, closely followed by Ronan Geaney in 4th. Ronan finished 3rd in the boys U10 500m where, Eoin Ronayne, Ciaran O’Connor, Adam Fitzgerald, Cillian Fitzgerald also competed. Eoin, Adam, Ronan, Cillian and Ciaran also took on the long jump and javelin. Mary Jane Casey and Aoife O’Connor competed in the girls U11 60m, 600m, long jump and javelin. Mary Jane just missed out in the 600m, finishing 4th.

We had 3 relay teams competing. The boys U10 team of Tomas Kiely, Eoin Ronayne, Adam Fitzgerald, Cillian Fitzgerald, Ciaran O’Connor, Ronan Geaney finished a strong 2nd in the semi-final, but in a very tough race, came 8th in the final. The girls U14 team of Amy O’Connell, Maebh O’Connell, Willow O’Gorman, Teegan Murphy, Anna Byrne and Ciara Hayes came 3rd in the semi, 6th in the final. The girls U17 team of Sarah O’Connell, Shannon O’Gorman, Ellie Barry and Ella O’Connor finished an admirable 6th in their final.
