Great efforts to no avail in hurling league

Fermoy 0-12 Douglas 0-21

We encountered Premier hurling heavyweights Douglas on Saturday last in Fitzgerald Park and it was a cracking game of hurling. Fermoy played a huge part in this and it was only in the last 15 minutes that Douglas exerted their superiority to pull away from the lads.

We played very well in large parts of this match but a few mistakes cost us in the end which gave them the impetus to go on and win the game. We were missing a few regulars but once again the lads stepped up and showed that they are determined to drive on this year and be ready for the championship battles that lie ahead.

There was a stiff breeze blowing which was more across the pitch and it was difficult to judge shots from distance for both teams. Douglas got a great start going two points up in the first 4 mins before Padraig de Róiste opened our account from play on 5 mins.

Douglas made it 0-03 to 0-01 with a free on 9 mins before two points from Liam Coleman (a 65) and a superb point from play by Ben Twomey levelled the scores by the 14th minute. Douglas hit back, scoring points on the 16th and 17th minutes, before we came back to level it on the 21st minute with a pointed Liam free and a lovely point from Darragh Daly.

Douglas upped the pace at this stage and got three quick points in the 21st, 22nd and 24th mins to go 3 points up again. A Liam free on 26 mins stemmed the tide a little but they scored again on 27 mins. Liam pointed another free on 29 mins to make it a two point game but Douglas had the final say in the last two minutes of the half, scoring 2 points before the short whistle to deservedly go in four points up at half-time on a scoreline of Fermoy 0-07 Douglas 0-11.

Douglas started the second half at a fierce pace and had two points tacked on to increase their lead to six by the 34th minute. If there’s one thing that Fermoy are showing this year it’s a never say die attitude and for the next 8 minutes they played excellent hurling. Liam scored a free on 35 mins followed by a point from play on 36 mins.

Another Liam free on 37 mins left three points between the sides and yet another free from Liam on 40 mins had Douglas really worried. Believe it or not a superb Shane Aherne point on 41 mins from out on the stand-side sideline made it a one point game. Could this be our day as the Douglas team was shell shocked?

Unfortunately Douglas realised at this stage that these upstarts from Fermoy could actually win the game and to be fair to them they responded like any good team would. Suddenly they upped their game, forcing us into mistakes and punishing any errors we made. We did not raise a flag of any colour for the final 15 minutes which was cruel on the lads as they ended up going for goals to try and pull back a rampant Douglas side.

Douglas got the final eight points between the 46th and 60th minutes. The boys tried their best to keep on par with them but their experience and fitness was far superior to us so we have to bow to that.

These games are priceless for the lads as they learn so much from the Premier sides and they know they are not miles behind them. Well done to all involved and on to the next match against Newtownshandrum in a couple of weeks’ time, Fermoy Abu! Final score: Fermoy 0-12 Douglas 0-21.
