Castlelyons ladies’ debut with win in first league match

-

Castlelyons 4-04 Rathpeacon 2-05

History was made in Castlelyons when the Castlelyons LGFC club took part in its first ladies’ football league match.

Castlelyons U12s took on Rathpeacon in what proved to be a very entertaining game, with two very evenly matched sides. The local club started very well and took a foothold in Rathpeacons half, but found scores hard to come by. The deadlock was broken when, after hard work, Rosanna Maloney laid the ball off to Sarah O’Connor who crashed it into the Rathpeacon net.

Soon after, a second goal was added from Sophie Crowley, getting onto a long ball from the hard-working Lily O’Callaghan in midfield.

This spurred Rathpeacon into action who took over for the last ten minutes of the half but found a tenacious defence in Natasha Leetch, Jane Verling and Aine Finn.

When Rathpeacon eventually got inside the Castlelyons’ defence, Isabelle O’Mahony was equal to the task, making a number of great saves.

In the second half, Rathpeacon started brightly, getting four points in a row, followed up by a goal.

However, Castlelyons rallied again with great work from Ella Burke and Eve O’Doherty clearing their lines.

Sarah O’Connor powered through for her third goal of the night and then a long-range point from Lily O’Callaghan sealed victory for the Castlelyons girls.

It was a great performance all around and special mention must go to the two U10s, Anna Quirke and Isabelle Crowley who played up the age and were fantastic.

It was a great start on Friday, May 13, for a new era in ladies football in Castlelyons.
