Well done to ladies Minor and men’s Cashman Cup teams
Sunday last was another wonderful day for Fermoy Ladies when our Minor Cup team had a great win at home playing Faithlegg Golf Club.
The match began at 1.30pm and shortly after the first ladies drove off the first tee the rain began but fortunately it did clear relatively quickly and the match continued in pleasant conditions. Lisa McLoughlin led off for Fermoy and secured our first win on the seventeenth, closely followed by Aileen Ryan who won on the sixteenth.
The excitement was building on the sidelines for the managers and supporters with three teams still in action on the course. Third out was Emma Comyn who fought hard but lost her match, we cannot expect to win them all. The crucial win for Fermoy was clinched by Get Into Golf co-ordinator Annette Twomey who has set a fine example for her recruits.
Annette was the last to tee off and had a comfortable win on the fourteenth. Anne Dineen was in a match that was nip and tuck all the way and was level when called in. Well done to all the team and managers Fiona Collier and Catherine Murphy and thanks to all the cadies and supporters. Best of luck to you all in the next round.
GER O’SULLIVAN WINS DOLLS HOUSE BOUTIQUE AND BAKER CUP COMPETITION
The competition sponsored by The Doll’s House Boutique in Mitchelstown and played Sunday 15th /Monday 16th had a great turnout of members. Given the horrendous forecast for Monday the number of entries on Sunday increased threefold as happened in the previous week’s competition however Monday’s weather was not altogether as dreadful as predicated.
While the morning players did get some very heavy persistent showers the afternoon ladies had a rather pleasant afternoons golf.
The scoring overall was high with the first two being separated on count back. In first place was Ger O’Sullivan who, playing on Sunday, returned an excellent score of 5 up to edge out Yvonne Stephenson in second.
The special prize for seventh place which is part of the Baker Cup competition tradition was won by Kathleen O’Regan who had a very good score of 2up and was sponsored by ladies PRO Audrey Cremen. Lady Captain Siobhan congratulated all the prize-winners and on behalf of all the members thanked our member Aileen Redmond for her very generous sponsorship.

COMMISERATIONS TO OUR MARY MCKENNA TEAM
Alas our hopes of moving forward in the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy were dashed on Wednesday last in Tralee Golf Club while playing in horrendous conditions with strong wind, torrential rain and even hailstones. Having won our match 5/0 against Cork Golf Club at home we travelled to Tralee on Wednesday 18th last with some confidence. Our team fought gallantly but local knowledge won out which was not altogether surprising in the dreadful conditions on a links course.
Welcoming players from a parkland course like Fermoy which has many trees to shelter players from wind to a very open course without any protection whatsoever was certainly advantageous to our opposition who knew how to manage the wind on what is their back yard and unfortunately we lost 3.2 to the locals.
Managers Vera Santry and Kathleen O’Regan speaking afterwards thanked the full panel for their total commitment, practicing both at home and in Tralee. The late afternoon practice and competition times allocated to us by Tralee GC meant that our ladies were traveling long distances home late at night.
They also thanked lady captain Siobhan and Vice President Eileen both of whom were on the panel and our supporters who came and braved the elements. There was no protection for you whatsoever on the sidelines and a big thank you for your support and encouragement. Lastly from all of us on the panel we thank you, Vera and Kathleen, for your commitment to the team and the work involved in organising coaching and practice which was very much appreciated by all of us.
THURSDAY LADIES
Thursday last was a lovely morning for golf although on the breezy side and twenty one ladies arrived for the popular weekly scramble. In first place was the team of Rita Mulvihill, Nuala Rice and Irene Murphy 30.3 nett and they also had the best gross It is lovely to welcome Irene to the fold she is a superb golfer who has represented Fermoy GC with distinction in the past. Irene is the daughter of Patsy who has been playing with Thursday ladies since its commencement. In fourth were Vice President Eileen O’Sullivan, Pam Hickey and Pauline Hyland 31.4 nett.
FRIDAY NIGHT MIXED
Despite Met Eireann’s dire warnings for heavy showers all day last Friday leading many of us believe that the social mixed would not go ahead, it turned out to be a beautiful evening. The meteorologists certainly got it completely incorrect for “Barony of Condons and Clangibbon” nevertheless sixteen members arrived to enjoy the nine hole competition. In first place with 29.9 nett were Tom O’Keeffe, Rita Mulvihill and Liz Geany with the team of Denis Crowley, Mary Lysaght and Mary O’Brien in second with 30.1 nett.

THURSDAY SENIOR GENTS
While the fine weather attracted an excellent turnout of 48 members there was a stiff southerly breeze blowing across the course which had an impact on the scoring. As with the ladies our competition was won by the team that returned the lowest gross score when the 32 shots taken by John Whelton, Tom Barry, Niall Cremen and Tony Beecher converted into 22.4 nett.
This was good enough to win by .7 of a shot from Paddy Kenny, Tim Buckley, Oliver Doyle and Leo O’Mahony with Ml Caplis, Tom O’Connor, Con O’Sullivan and Paudie Scanlon in third a further half a shot in arrears. As always there was a very sociable atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards as we enjoyed a chat and our tea and coffee which is as important to us as is the golf.
